# The suspended national deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya faces imminent arrest
# And soccer: Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the sport’s first dollar billionaire
# The Special Investigating Unit has seized three multi-million-rand Lamborghinis, designer furniture, and valuable artworks from tenderpreneur Hangwani Maumela’s three-storey Sandhurst mansion in Sandton, Johannesburg, as part of an 820-million-rand asset recovery linked to alleged coordinated syndicate looting at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew allegedly benefited through 41 companies awarded government tenders. Freezing orders are already in place on his properties in KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town, and his bank accounts. Officials say today’s raid continues the ongoing campaign against public sector corruption.
# Suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya is reportedly facing imminent arrest. Police have apparently arrived at his home in Centurion, Gauteng, this morning to detain him on charges of defeating the ends of justice. His lawyer, Ian Levitt, says they’ve not been informed of the exact charges. Sibiya was suspended by national commissioner Fannie Masemola earlier after allegations that he conspired to disband the Kwa-Zulu-Natal political killings task team, claims Sibiya dismissed as baseless lies.
# President Ramaphosa says it is unacceptable that developing countries pay higher debt costs than developed nations, calling it a driver of global inequality. Speaking on reforming international financial institutions at the European Union global gateway forum in Brussels, Belgium, Ramaphosa revealed that South Africa has established a G20 committee to address wealth inequality. He urged climate finance support, commitments to be met, and fairer mineral development benefiting local economies:

Financial information and media firm Bloomberg had measured the 40-year-old player’s wealth for the first time and values his net worth at 1.4-billion-dollar – or 24.3-billion-rand. This includes salaries, investments and endorsements, including a decade-long sponsorship by Nike worth 308-million-rand per year. Ronaldo became the best-paid player in history when he joined Saudi team Al-Nassr for over four-billion-rand per season in 2022.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-10-cents and the euro at 19-rand-85-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-86-cents and Bitcoin trades at 123-thousand-111-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-40-dollars-61-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-87-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai has won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Royal Swedish Academy praised his visionary and compelling body of work, which explores the power of art amid apocalyptic and challenging themes. The Nobel Committee’s Steve Sem-Sandberg says Krasznahorkai, inspired by his trips to China and Japan, is known for telling long, imaginative stories with strange and extreme characters:
