# The MK Party demands the immediate arrest of Ramaphosa’s nephew over the Tembisa Hospital corruption
# Rescue workers rush to reach dozens still trapped after a school collapsed in Indonesia
# And tennis: Coco Gauff joins Iga Swiatek in calling for shorter seasons
# The MK Party has called for the immediate arrest of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew, Hangwani Maumela, following the Special Investigating Unit’s interim report on corruption and looting at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng. The report implicates Maumela and businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala in fraudulent contracts and hands a prosecution-ready case to the National Prosecuting Authority. MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela says justice will only be served when those at the top of these criminal networks are held accountable:
# Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo says WhatsApp records show businessman Brown Mogotsi repeatedly sought updates from Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala on Independent Police Investigative Directorate matters, court proceedings and alleged payments to politicians. Khumalo told the Madlanga commission in Pretoria that messages indicate Mogotsi’s interest in monitoring investigations and legal actions involving the alleged crime cartel, suggesting attempts to influence outcomes and stay informed of enforcement activities:
# The Progressive Forces of South Africa have urged acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia and Gauteng Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni to investigate the death of former Zambian president Edgar Lungu on South African soil. National Strategic Organiser Bonang Letsokoane cites family and political concerns over possible poisoning. She warns that a delay or inaction could compromise the integrity of South Africa’s justice system, stressing the country’s legal duty to probe suspicious deaths:
Moving abroad:
# Rescuers in East Java, Indonesia, are racing to find 38 people believed to be trapped in the rubble of a collapsed school building. Officials say three children were killed and 99 others were taken to hospital, some of them with critical injuries. The death toll is expected to rise. Many of those who are trapped are teenage boys who had gathered for prayers. According to reports the two-storey building had an unstable foundation and could not support the weight of the additional construction of two more floors.
# Tennis: American Coco Gauff called for shorter seasons, saying it was impossible to play more than she already does, after Poland’s Iga Swiatek also hit out at the number of tournaments. They were speaking at the China Open, where five players retired injured from matches yesterday. Gauff weighed in after top seed Swiatek said yesterday she may skip mandatory tournaments to protect her health. The amount of matches in the men’s and women’s calendar has been a major talking point in recent years.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-27-cents and the euro at 20-rand-28-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 113-thousand-87-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-813-dollars-61-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-85-cents a barrel.
