# South Africans have until midnight to register to vote in the upcoming elections after president Cyril Ramaphosa officially proclaimed 29 May as the election date. News24 reports the Independent Electoral Commission’s deputy CEO, Mawethu Mosery, outlined the process leading up to the election, including the closure of the voters’ roll after the proclamation is published. The final election timetable will be presented to political parties after a committee meeting this weekend and is expected to be gazetted and published early next week. There are currently 27.6-million voters on the voters’ roll.
# DA leader John Steenhuisen has issued a letter of demand to the ANC, urging compliance with a Constitutional Court ruling to release cadre deployment records dating back to 2013. He highlights the ANC’s failure to include president Cyril Ramaphosa’s emails and WhatsApps during his tenure as the committee’s chairperson. Steenhuisen emphasises the importance of exposing the impact of cadre deployment on the country:
# The owners of the Enyobeni tavern in the Eastern Cape where 21 teenagers died in June 2022, have been sentenced to a fine of five-thousand-rand each or 100 days in prison for selling alcohol to a minor. The East London Regional Court found Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu sold liquor to at least one minor during a celebration at the tavern. Magistrate Kevin von Bratt says the case was about contravention of the Liquor Act and not the deaths themselves:
# Cricket: The Proteas involved in the Indian Premier League were instructed to play in the first week of the T20 Challenge before leaving. The local competition starts on the eighth of next month, and will feature all eight Division One teams. The Proteas not chosen for the IPL will be available for the whole of the T20 Challenge. The IPL starts on the 22nd of March and ends on the 26th of May – just five days before the start of the T20 World Cup in America and the Caribbean.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-27-cents and the euro at 20-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-44-cents and Bitcoin trades at 51-thousand-150-dollars-67-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-22-dollars-20-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-58-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Several new artists have been added to the line-up for the second annual Journey to Jazz Festival scheduled to take place from the first to the fifth of May in Prince Albert, Western Cape. South African jazz vocalist, pianist, and composer, Thandi Ntuli; Women of the World from the Berklee Indian Ensemble, and a quintet of three-South Africans and two Swiss artists, Skyjack, have joined the prestigious line-up. The organisers say the festival will be a mixture of modern and classic jazz.
