# Tshwane mayor, Cilliers Brink says the metro needs to stabilise the city’s finances by devising and implementing a bold recovery plan that focuses on the core functions of the municipality. Brink outlined the city’s current financial status and ongoing work to rescue and stabilise finances and improve revenue collection. The mayor says the metro plans to increase it’s revenue-collection campaign Tshwane Ya Tima:
# City Power is calling for more arrests of staff involved in cable theft and vandalism of infrastructure across Johannesburg. A 43-year-old employee who works at the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre was arrested recently for theft of non-ferrous metals. City Power’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, says this comes less than a month after another employee and a contractor were arrested for attempting to steal cable in the Randburg area:
# The Democratic Republic of Congo’s government intends to end a 20-year moratorium on capital punishment for soldiers guilty of treason in the conflict against M23 Movement rebels. The government intends to curb acts of treason among soldiers. Since 2003, death sentences in the DRC have been consistently commuted to life imprisonment. Justice minister Rose Mutombo Kiesse has formally proposed lifting the moratorium in response to heightened concerns about treason within the military. This move comes as the country faces aggression from Rwanda, denying allegations of supporting the M23.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana’s captain and goalkeeper, Ronwen Wiliams, has won the Afcon 2023 Golden Glove. Wiliams’s exceptional performance and crucial saves throughout the tournament played a vital role in Bafana Bafana’s success. His heroic efforts helped the team reach the semi-finals after a 24-year hiatus in their match against Cape Verde. Wiliams’s penalty save against DR Congo’s Leopards also secured South Africa a third-place finish. With only three goals conceded, Wiliams surpassed Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali to claim the Golden Glove.
