# The police intensify the hunt for suspects in the Cleveland mass shootings
# The Refugee Appeals Authority urges asylum seekers to finalise their pending appeals
# And cricket: Lord’s pitch is deemed unsatisfactory in the first Test between England and New Zealand
# Acting national police commissioner Puleng Dimpane welcomes the swift response by Gauteng provincial teams following the mass shootings in Cleveland, Johannesburg, that left 12 people dead. She ordered the deployment of additional national specialised units, including forensic experts and tactical response teams, to support the investigation. Police spokesperson Nonkululeko Phokane says a multidisciplinary task team is tracing leads, including a white Toyota Quantum linked to the incident, as efforts are intensified:
Meanwhile, RISE Mzansi calls for urgent strengthening of crime intelligence following the massacre. The party’s Mabine Seabe says this attack highlights a growing crisis of illegal firearms and organised criminal networks operating in the city. He urges law enforcement to improve intelligence-led policing and disrupt violent syndicates before attacks occur. Seabe warns continued failures could further destabilise communities:
# The Refugee Appeals Authority has called on asylum seekers with pending appeals outside the Durban refugee reception office in KwaZulu-Natal to urgently report to its offices. The initiative forms part of a programme to clear a backlog of appeals and speed up decisions on asylum applications. The authority warns those who fail to respond may have their appeals decided based on existing documents, resulting in a final ruling on their asylum status.
Moving abroad:
# Northern Ireland’s government has condemned anti-immigration protests that erupted into violence overnight following the arrest of a Sudanese man over an alleged knife attack in Belfast. Homes and vehicles were set alight, while about 100 masked men kicked in doors and broke windows, demanding that foreigners leave. The 30-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder. Deputy first minister Emma Little-Pengelly says he has no place in the country:
# Cricket: The pitch of the home of cricket, Lord’s in London, was found to be unsatisfactory during the first Test between England and New Zealand. Match referee Andy Pycroft delivered the verdict after the hosts won by 115 runs within four days. England’s captain, Ben Stokes, and former captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan also criticised the pitch. Lord’s owners, the Marylebone Cricket Club, apologised afterwards, while the venue received one demerit point. The penultimate Test starts at the Oval in London next Wednesday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-59-cents and the euro at 19-rand-15-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-21-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-890-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-166-dollars-10-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 92-dollars-11-cents a barrel.
