In this bulletin:
# The DA demands a governance agreement guided by the Constitution in talks with the ANC
# The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education confirms 20 schools were damaged by the tornado
# And rugby: Warrick Gelant is back for the Stormers, but Evan Roos is out
# The DA says it is ready to negotiate with the ANC based on key principles, like protecting the Constitution, creating an efficient public service, and devolving powers to provinces. According to News24, the party supports Operation Vulindlela and its priorities, such as Eskom’s unbundling. However, the DA is firm on maintaining the independence of the South African Reserve Bank and opposes cadre deployment, potentially conflicting with the ANC’s stance. The DA also proposes a multi-party government operating model with a dispute resolution mechanism.
Meanwhile, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela commends president Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC for proposing a government of national unity to foster inclusivity in South Africa’s democracy. She views a government of national unity as a step towards uniting diverse perspectives and unlocking every individual’s potential. Madonsela, reflecting on 30-years of democracy, urges citizens to make wise choices to establish a transformative society based on democratic values, social justice, and fundamental human rights.
# The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has confirmed that approximately 20 schools were damaged by the recent tornado. According to spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi, plans are underway to relocate affected learners, following disruptions to mid-year exams. Meanwhile non-governmental organisations and emergency teams are providing aid to repair the damaged infrastructure. Mahlambi says the cost of the damage is yet to be determined:
# Police minister Bheki Cele and national commissioner Fannie Masemola handed over more than 130 vehicles to the Criminal Record Centre Units at the Police’s Tshwane Academy. These units link suspects to crime scenes through evidence collection and analysis. Cele says the vehicles will improve operations, including response times to crime scenes. With high crime levels, Cele calls on the units to prevent, combat and investigate crimes and uphold the law:
# Rugby: Warrick Gelant makes his return at fullback for the Stormers in tomorrow’s United Rugby Championship quarterfinal against Glasgow Warriors. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu moves to inside centre and Ben Loader comes into the starting line-up on the left wing. In the forward pack Evan Roos has been ruled out with a concussion picked up during training, and is replaced at openside flank by Willie Engelbrecht. There is an all-new front row of Brok Harris, Joseph Dweba and Frans Malherbe. Kick-off is at 8:35 tomorrow night.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-89-cents and the euro at 20-rand-58-cents.
