# The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has reported significant progress in the fourth quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year in combating crime. In a media briefing, the unit, also known as the Hawks, highlighted their achievements, including the arrest of 547 suspects, for fraud, corruption and attacks on police. Fraud contributed to the highest number of arrests. Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya says Gauteng contributed most arrests followed by North West:
# Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi says negotiations for provincial government executives have concluded. Lesufi postponed the provincial cabinet announcement on Sunday, citing complex discussions. Nearly two weeks since his re-election, Lesufi has yet to announce his executive. Speaking at an electrification project in Kromdraai, Mogale City, he assured that the appointments will be announced soon, pending approval from the national government:
# bp Southern Africa has donated 2.5-million-rand to help 100 of the North-West University’s students clear their outstanding fees, enabling them to enter the working world with confidence. Answering a parliamentary question earlier this year, Higher Education, Science and Innovation, minister Blade Nzimande said 56-thousand-627 students at the NWU have outstanding fees. The NWU principal and vice chancellor, Professor Bismark Tyobeka says many highly talented students face a tragic shortfall in funding, which needs to be addressed urgently. Tyobeka says they are thankful for bpSA’s commitment to social and economic development in South Africa.
# Soccer: The 38-year-old former Cameroon international, Landry Nguemo, died in a traffic accident on Thursday. The Cameroon Football Federation made the announcement on its Facebook page. The Yaounde-born midfielder played 42 times and scored three goals for Cameroon between 2006 and 2014. He spent most of his club career in France, starting as a 16-year-old at the academy of AS Nancy-Lorraine. He also had stints in Turkey and Norway before returning to the Nancy Under 16s, with the desire to pass on to the kids his knowledge and experience.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-20-cents and the euro at 19-rand-49-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-2-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-402-dollars-89-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-331-dollars-5-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 85-dollars-82-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The American actor Bill Cobbs has died at the age of 90. He was best known for his roles as security guard Reggie in the 2006 film Night At The Museum, and as Whitney Houston’s manager Bill Devaney in the 1992 film The Bodyguard. His agent told the PA news agency the veteran actor died on Tuesday evening in the Inland Empire, California. Cobbs was surrounded by his family and is thought to have died of natural causes. His TV credits included appearances on The Sopranos, The West Wing, Sesame Street and ER.
