In this bulletin:
# The DA demands a governance agreement guided by the Constitution in talks with the ANC
# The Discovery security breach could result in a fine or imprisonment
# And rugby: Adré Smith extends his stay at the Stormers until 2027
# The DA says it is ready to negotiate with the ANC based on key principles, like protecting the Constitution, creating an efficient Public Service, and devolving powers to provinces. According to News24, the party supports Operation Vulindlela and its priorities, such as Eskom’s unbundling. However, the DA is firm on maintaining the independence of the South African Reserve Bank and opposes cadre deployment, potentially conflicting with the ANC’s stance. The DA also proposes a multi-party government operating model with a dispute resolution mechanism.
Meanwhile, the ACDP has distanced itself from a group of political parties who are challenging the election results. Some parties have accused the Electoral Commission of irregularities and vote rigging. The ACDP’s Raymond Tlaeli says they have appointed an accomplished independent elections analyst to spearhead their objections to IEC:
# The Information Regulator of South Africa has warned the Discovery security breach could result in a fine or imprisonment. The insurer has reported a compromise of client information and notified affected clients. The breach involved an impersonator accessing personal data through third-party breaches, leading to 19 instances of policy information being leaked. The regulator’s Collen Weapond has urged the enhancement of security measures:
# Irish voters picked up the baton on day two of marathon European Union elections today, after the Netherlands kicked off the ballot with a strong showing by the far right. Ireland’s 37-year-old prime minister Simon Harris voted near his home south of Dublin before a whistlestop tour to canvass for both local and European Parliament elections. For the first time in an Irish EU vote, many candidates are running on an anti-immigration platform, either as independents or for fringe nationalist parties. Most of the EU’s 27 nations vote on Sunday.
# Rugby: Lock Adré Smith has become the latest player to sign a new deal with the Stormers. The 27-year-old, who joined the Cape Town-based franchise in 2021, has extended his contract until 2027. Smith says since moving to the Stormers from Griquas, he has taken his game to another level. Director of rugby John Dobson says he is looking forward to seeing Smith evolve over the next three seasons. Other players who recently signed new deals with the club include Manie Libbok and Suleiman Hartzenberg.
