# The national joint inquiry into gender-based violence and femicide has begun in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The inquiry is being conducted jointly by the Commission for Gender Equality, the South African Human Rights Commission and the CRL Rights Commission. The five-day inquiry is examining how South Africa’s criminal justice system responds to GBVF, including reporting, victim support, investigations and pre-trial processes. It will hear survivors’ experiences and examine police, forensic and accountability challenges. Recommendations will be aimed at strengthening survivor protection and institutional accountability.
# The chairperson of Parliament’s impeachment committee, Makashule Gana, has filed an answering affidavit with the High Court in Cape Town regarding the rescinding of advocate Thandazani Madonsela’s recommendation as evidence leader. The EFF and the African Legal Professionals Association filed the legal challenge against Parliament’s withdrawal of Madonsela’s recommendation following concerns regarding his prior work for the ANC. Gana called for the swift finalisation of the terms of reference:
# The GOOD Party in Cape Town is calling for real and lasting solutions to violence, saying every community has the right to a safe and peaceful neighbourhood. Sixteen people were shot dead in the city over the weekend, including ten at an entertainment venue in Lwandle. GOOD’s Secretary-General Brett Herron says the Western Cape’s own Safety Plan admits violence grows out of poverty, unemployment, overcrowding and neglect:
Moving abroad:
# Pope Leo has condemned medically assisted dying as false compassion during a visit to Lourdes in France. Speaking to about 150-thousand people at a Mass, Leo said people living with severe illness and pain have an inherent dignity that must be respected. He says laws should not remove that dignity and declared that what is legal is not necessarily moral. France recently approved legislation allowing adults with incurable illnesses to receive lethal medication. Leo also met seven survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
# Cricket: Experienced Proteas batter David Miller says he loves the number five slot, but would play wherever he is needed. He followed his slow nine runs in the first one-day match against Australia in Durban with a whirlwind 142 off just 93 balls in yesterday’s second encounter at the Wanderes, helping seal South Africa’s sixth consecutive series victory over Australia. This was the best ODI score of 37-year-old Miller’s career. He says he just needed to trust himself after being away from the format for some time.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-45-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-70-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-80-cents and Bitcoin trades at 82-thousand-796-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-156-dollars-83-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 105-dollars-25-cents a barrel.
