Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The NUM calls on the entire construction industry to pay attention to health and safety protocols
# President Cyril Ramaphosa approves a law recognising Muslim marriages
# And a former Olympic long jump champion doesn’t expect fireworks in the item in Paris
# The National Union of Mineworkers is calling on the entire construction industry to pay attention to health and safety protocols on sites as prescribed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. This follows after a building under construction in George collapsed and killed eight workers. NUM’s Mlondolozi Limaphi says the unfortunate death of eight workers and the entrapment of workers under the rubble could have been avoided by all parties involved in the construction project if health and safety was a priority instead of profits:
# President Ramaphosa has signed into law the Divorce Amendment Bil, recognising Muslim marriages to safeguard women and children during marital dissolution. Prompted by a Constitutional Court ruling, this amendment addresses previous shortcomings in the law, providing for the definition of a Muslim marriage, protection of dependent and minor children, asset redistribution, and forfeiture of patrimonial benefits. The move aims to ensure that Muslim couples marrying under Islamic law receive statutory protection without the need for an additional civil marriage registration, as previously required.
# Cosatu says it strongly rejects the DA’s proposals to cancel the many labour rights women workers have achieved since the dawn of democracy. The union federation says the DA has proposed that more than 90-percent of employers be exempted from the entire labour protections framework. Cosatu’s Matthew Parks says this approach will spell doom for eight million women workers, and others:
# Olympics: Four-time long jump gold medallist Carl Lewis doesn’t expect fireworks in the item at the Paris Games this year. The American won the item at four consecutive Games from 1984 to 1996, as well as two world titles. Lewis describes the long jump as the toughest of all field items and questions the mental strength of the current athletes. The world record currently stands at 8.95 metres and the Olympic record at 8.90, while Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece won gold at the Tokyo Games with a jump of 8.41 metres.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-53-cents and the euro at 19-rand-90-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-15-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-987-dollars-7-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-308-dollars-24-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 84-dollars-12-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are teaming up to offer a new streaming bundle comprising Disney Plus, Hulu, and Max, which will be available to customers in the US later this year. The move comes as they face competition from rivals, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Disney Entertainment’s Joe Earley says this incredible new partnership puts subscribers first, giving them access to blockbuster films, and three libraries featuring the very best brands and entertainment in streaming today.
