# The Activists and Citizens Forum says the commission of inquiry into explosive allegations of criminal activities and corruption within the police, made by KwaZulu-Natal commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is a political delaying tactic to suppress the truth. The forum says they reject the placing of Police minister Senzo Mchunu on leave of absence and called on president Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Mchunu. However, spokesperson Dennis Bloem says Ramaphosa is too spineless to do so, and he must resign immediately:
The IFP however commends Ramaphosa for acting on its proposal to establish a commission of inquiry to probe these wide-ranging allegations. The party’s national spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, told eNCA this is a matter that cuts to the heart of public trust in the country’s democratic institutions:
# The mother of eleven-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, Tiffany Nicole Meek, appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng today, accused of her son’s murder. The Grade 6 learner was found dead outside his Fleurhof home in Johannesburg in May, bruised and partially unclothed, shortly after his mother reported him missing. Magistrate Ruby Mathyss postponed the case to Friday for a formal bail application. The community continues to demand justice after the young boy’s tragic death.
# Motorsport: Six-time MotoGP champion, Marc Marquez, has stretched his championship lead over his brother, Álex, to 83 points after winning the German Grand Prix. This is the Ducati rider’s ninth MotoGP victory at the Sachsenring, in his 200th overall start. Álex finished second for Gresini Racing with teammate Francesco Bagnaia in third. South Africa’s Brad Binder finished seventh for Red Bull KTM. The next race, the Grand Prix of Czechia, takes place this coming weekend, with MotoGP returning to Brno after a five-year absence.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-84-cents and the euro at 20-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-1-cent and Bitcoin trades at 121-thousand-941-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-372-dollars-79-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-62-cents a barrel.
# And finally: With today being World Chimpanzee Day, the United Nations is honouring Jane Goodall for her tireless commitment to chimpanzees. On this day in 1960, Goodall began her research at the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, recognising the importance of chimpanzees, as well as the urgent need to protect them and their habitats. The United Nations says due to deforestation, illegal hunting, and the devastating effects of the illegal pet trade, the chimpanzee population has been steadily declining in the wild.
