In this bulletin:
# The MK Party says the ANC’s trademark appeal is futile
# Saftu wishes courage to a Miss SA finalist to overcome bullying
# And, soccer: Mbappé buys a majority stake in a second league French club
# The MK Party’s legal counsel, Dali Mpofu, says the ANC’s trademark appeal is dead in the water. The High Court in Durban is hearing the ANC’s application for leave to appeal against the April ruling allowing the MK Party to use its former armed wing’s name and logo. The hearing also marks former president Jacob Zuma’s first public appearance since his expulsion from the ANC earlier this week. Mpofu told the court the ANC’s appeal is hopeless:
Meanwhile, political analyst Levy Ndou says the ANC must go back to basics and focus on the party’s role in the government of national unity. This follows its loss of an outright majority in the May elections. The ANC’s national executive committee will hold a Lekgotla in Boksburg from Sunday to Tuesday. It is expected to outline policy programmes based on manifesto priorities. Ndou emphasised to the SABC the need for the ANC to restore public confidence through effective programmes:
# Union federaton Saftu has wished courage to Miss South Africa finalist Chidinma Adetshina, to overcome the bullying and continue contesting for the crown. This follows speculation over her citizenship. Saftu’s spokesperson, Trevor Shaku, says Sports, Arts and Culture minister Gayton McKenzie has regrettably contributed to Adetshina’s bullying, and strengthened the campaign against her on the internet:
# The Western Cape Education Department is exploring the possibility of providing weekend food parcels to learners in the school nutrition programme. Nationally the nutrition programme has been allocated 9.7-billion-rand for the 2024/’25 financial year, an increase of 5.6-percent from the previous year. In the Western Cape, more than 500-thousand vulnerable learners receive free meals through the nutrition programme each year. Premier Alan Winde says the reality is that so many learners get their last meal on a Friday and their next meal on a Monday morning.
# Soccer: French star Kylian Mbappé’s company has bought a majority stake in local second league club Caen. The 25-year-old forward reportedly invested 295-million-rand of his own money in the deal via the company’s investment arm. This is the same amount Mbappé will earn per season at Spanish giant Real Madrid which he joined from Paris Saint-Germain recently. The current president of Caen’s supervisory board, Pierre-Antoine Capton, remains a minority shareholder. The club was relegated from the first league in 2019, and finished sixth last season.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-22-cents and the euro at 19-rand-65-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-28-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-369-dollars-40-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-434-dollars-64-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-31-cents a barrel.
