# The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies says it is aware of reports that some sources cited in the draft National Artificial Intelligence Policy may be fictitious. The draft, published by minister Solly Malatsi for public comment, aims to guide responsible AI use and economic growth. Reports from News24 indicate some references may be AI-generated, raising concerns about credibility. The department says they will respond as scrutiny grows over governance and research standards.
# The mass funeral for seven members of the Monswamy family is underway in Stanger High Sports Ground, KwaZulu-Natal. The family was kidnapped from their KwaDukuza home and later murdered in Melmoth. # The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds in parts of the Western and Northern Cape. Strong north-westerly winds of up to 65-kilometres-per-hour, with gusts reaching 75, are expected. Affected areas include Namakwa, Central Karoo and Breede Valley. Authorities warn of possible infrastructure damage and travel disruptions, urging residents and motorists to exercise caution on roads.
# Tennis: Iga Swiatek was forced to retire from her Madrid Open clash with Ann Li on Saturday due to illness. A champion in the Spanish capital in 2024, Swiatek rebounded from a one-set deficit to level the contest but put an end to proceedings while down 0-3 in the decider. The Polish six-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be struggling and asked for the doctor after getting broken early in the third set. It is Swiatek’s earliest ever exit in five appearances in Madrid.
And, soccer: Soccer fans have begun making their way to the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg as South Africa’s biggest soccer rivalry resumes between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the 185th Soweto Derby at 3 this afternoon. The Sea Robbers aim to boost their title chase as they remain in pursuit of Mamelodi Sundowns who have two games in hand on the Betway Premiership League, while Amakhosi target CAF qualification. Chiefs lead the historic tally with 75 wins to Pirates’ 50, highlighting Africa’s fiercest and most celebrated soccer rivalries.
