# British prime minister Keir Starmer has defended his decision to attend the G20 leaders’ summit in South Africa this weekend, saying the event is an important forum for his country. He has been criticised for the number of international trips he has taken, with the trip to South Africa being the 45th country he has visited since taking office. Starmer says the international issues that will be discussed at the summit have an impact on his country, while the G20 nations are important to Britain’s economy.
# The US State Department has revoked former minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor’s visa. She was granted a multiple-entry visitor’s visa for short-term stays in America after she retired from politics last year. Pandor, who is currently the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s chairperson, says she was informed of the decision in an email from the US Consulate this week, with no reasons given. Pandor’s most recent visit to America was this week.
# The GOOD Party says it strongly condemns the George Municipality’s latest attempt to claim it will now review its legislation and internal processes after the fatal building collapse in May last year. The disaster killed 34 people. GOOD’s Chantelle Kyd says the municipality has deliberately delayed this review, despite being aware for months that urgent action was necessary to protect the public:
# Rugby: Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus says he definitely sees a world in which Jacques Nienaber returns to the coaching team ahead of the 2027 World Cup in Australia. The 53-year-old, who guided the Boks to World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, is currently Leinster’s coach. His contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 club season. Erasmus has acknowledged that other teams, including Ireland or England, may also seek Nienaber’s expertise:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand–27-cents and the euro at 19-rand-93-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-61-cents and Bitcoin trades at 83-thousand-227-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-55-dollars-26-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-8-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, has been crowned Miss Universe in Thailand to end a scandal-filled pageant. The 25-year-old walked out of a pageant event earlier this month after an official publicly berated her and threatened to disqualify those who supported her. A week later, two judges resigned, with one of them accusing the organisers of rigging the competition. The pageant saw Thailand’s Praveenar Singh place second while the rest of the top-five are from Venezuela, the Philippines and the Ivory Coast.
