# Four learners are killed in a crash on the N12 in Daveyton, Gauteng

# Four learners died and five have been injured when a vehicle transporting them collided with a bakkie on the N12 outside Daveyton in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, this morning. City Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson, William Ntladi, says the entire freeway had to be closed for traffic as rescue teams are still on the scene. He says the victims are learners of different ages and schools:
# The Public Servants Association is saddened by the death of a mental health patient at Philadelphia Hospital in Limpopo after an attack by another patient. The aggressor assaulted staff and a fellow patient, leading to the latter’s death. Security and police intervention failed until the aggressor was shot in the leg. The PSA’s acting provincial manager, Phillip Maponya, urged health MEC Dieketseng Mashego to explain why the patient was not transferred to a mental health facility:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says agriculture is one of the most important sectors in the economy, as the goods and services produced across the value chain underpin the country’s food security. According to data from Agbiz, South Africa’s agricultural exports reached over 250-billion-rand last year. In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa says transformation remains a challenge in agriculture, with black farmers currently accounting for around ten-percent of the commercial output in agriculture. He adds that the country must have an agricultural sector that is representative and inclusive.
# Tennis: Last year’s runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, is through to the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Masters in the US. The Russian progressed after his local opponent, Alex Michelsen, retired with food poisoning just two games into their match. Eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-3, while Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki knocked out American Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 7-6. In the women’s draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland beat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-love, 6-2.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-30-cents and the euro at 19-rand-82-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 82-thousand-911-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-910-dollars-81-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-25-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The seventh edition of one of South Africa’s premier film events, the Joburg Film Festival, is set to get underway in Sandton from tomorrow until Sunday. This year’s edition is themed The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories, recognising that stories are the most precious treasures, illuminating shared humanity and collective wisdom. The festival’s executive director, Timothy Mangwedi, told Newzroom Afrika over 100 films, including 28 African and 12 world premieres, will be shown:
