Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The seventh edition of one of South Africa’s premier film events, the Joburg Film Festival, is set to get underway in Sandton from tomorrow until Sunday. This year’s edition is themed The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories, recognising that stories are the most precious treasures, illuminating shared humanity and collective wisdom. The festival’s executive director, Timothy Mangwedi, told Newzroom Afrika over 100 films, including 28 African and 12 world premieres, will be shown:
# South African sculptor and painter James Delaney is encouraging the addition of more vibrant metal sculptures to make public parks more inviting. The 53-year-old has, over the past decade, designed more than 100 sculptures for The Wilds Park in Johannesburg, including a striking red steel kudu antelope, stencil owls, and a pink giraffe. He has also exhibited his work in London, Paris and New York. Delaney says public art reflects South Africa’s ongoing journey of reconciliation:
# Actor Pierce Brosnan has said it is a given that the next James Bond should be British. In an interview with Sunday Telegraph, the former Bond also said he thought it was the right decision for the franchise’s long-standing producers to hand creative control to Amazon. Brosnan starred in four Bond films from 1995’s GoldenEye until 2002’s Die Another Day.
# Warner Brothers sci-fi space film Mickey 17 directed by Bong Joon-ho has debuted at number one at the North American box office. The film starring Robert Pattinson is about a young, heavily indebted man who joins an intergalactic expedition as an expendable and is killed multiple times. Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World slid to second place after three weeks in the number one spot, while Last Breath came in third. Neon’s thriller The Monkey and Sony’s Paddington in Peru rounded out the top five.
# And finally, cycling: Close to 28-thousand entrants took part in the 47th Cape Town Cycle Tour yesterday. South Africa’s 21-year-old Tyler Lange stormed to victory in the men’s elite race, while Germany’s Pia Grünewald delivered a masterclass in solo riding to clinch the women’s elite title. Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who completed the race alongside his wife, says the whole event was amazing:
