# With South Africans heading to the polls next week, president Cyril Ramaphosa has called for unity, saying divisions should not be allowed to undermine citizens’ democratic rights. He addressed the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 170th anniversary gala dinner. Forty-three suspected political assassinations were recorded between January and last month. Ramaphosa says local government is where many of democracy’s aspirations must find practical expression, and where people experience the quality of public services:
# The R300 in Cape Town has been temporarily closed following a shooting incident believed to be taxi-related. Emergency medical services and enforcement officials are at the scene, while traffic services work to reopen the road. The mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says enforcement services remain on high alert, with increased patrols around public transport interchanges:
# Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya says daily reported gastrointestinal illness cases in Bronkhorstspruit are declining, offering some relief amid concerns over water contamination. So far, 833 people have been affected, with about 40-percent of patients being children under four, after drinking water from the local water treatment plant which had been unchlorinated for weeks when supplies had run out. Moya says affected communities must still continue to rely on the safe alternative water supplies provided by the metro, while the plant undergoes rehabilitation.
Moving abroad:
# Senator and defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has declared himself Brazil’s rightful leader after fleeing to the US. He lost Sunday’s run-off election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was re-elected for a fourth term. Bolsonaro, who is currently under investigation by Brazil’s highest court for alleged acts of corruption and money laundering, and his family were granted US visas earlier this week. He says he departed from a regime of exception so he could become the leader his people deserve.
# Cricket: Proteas fast bowler Marco Jansen has celebrated his 100th Test wicket by becoming the world’s best bowler and allrounder in the longest format. He reached his 100th scalp in Australia’s first innings in the third Test in Cape Town. Twenty-six-year-old Jansen made his debut for South Africa in December 2021 and is currently playing in his 23rd Test. He has accumulated 770 runs so far. The Proteas’ bowling coach, Piet Botha, says Jansen is a very hard worker who isn’t afraid to learn from other players.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-64-cents and the euro at 18-rand-53-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-14-cents and Bitcoin trades at 80-thousand-120-dollars.
