# Cosatu says it will seek an urgent meeting with the new Higher Education and Training minister Buti Manamela and his deputy, Nomusa Dube-Ncube. Cosatu’s spokesperson, Matthew Parks, says this is to ensure the department continues its efforts and work with the federation to expand efforts to invest in the skills and education of workers, in particular sorting out worker education funding:
# A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of the chief auditor of the Ekurhuleni Municipality in Gauteng. Mpho Mafole was shot and killed on the R23 road in Kempton Park last month. Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says a 40-year-old man is expected to appear in the local Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. She says the team is also looking for a second suspect, Hlanganani Mncwango, after a warrant of arrest was issued for him:
# ActionSA has formally written to the Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, to seek a detailed disclosure of the government’s reported process to recover the bodies of the three Lily Mine workers. The remains of Yvonne Mnisi, Pretty Nkambule, and Solomon Nyerende, who were trapped underground after the mine collapsed in 2016, have still not been retrieved. ActionSA’s leader, Herman Mashaba, says they are frustrated over the long delays and previous exclusion from meaningful consultation:
# The Bureau for Economic Research says the consumer price index is expected to rise slightly in June but remains within the South African Reserve Bank’s target range of three-to-six-percent. Food prices, particularly meat, are forecast to push food inflation to about five-percent. Overall inflation is predicted to stay near three-percent. Statistics South Africa will release the official June CPI figures tomorrow. The bureau reports inflation expectations for 2025 have dropped to about four-percent, while wage increase forecasts have gone up.
# Motorsport: After nearly three decades, MotoGP will return to Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, in 2027. Since 2014, the premier motorcycle racing series has staged its Argentinian rounds at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit in the province of Santiago del Estero. Buenos Aires’ chief of government, Jorge Macri, says starting in October, the Autodromo Oscar y Juan Galvez circuit will undergo comprehensive renovations, including work on the track, paddock and safety zones, to ensure it’s ready to host in 2027.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-64-cents and the euro at 20-rand-63-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-279-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-385-dollars-46-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-84-cents a barrel.
