# President Cyril Ramaphosa says young South Africans today face a different challenge than the youth of 1976, finding their place in an economy that has for too long kept its doors closed to them. Tomorrow will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising. In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa says inclusive economic growth is essential in tackling youth unemployment in a meaningful way. He says one of the most successful programmes has been the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which has created in excess of 2.5 million work and livelihood opportunities.
# The Anglican Church of Southern Africa has expressed concern about the violence and brutality being inflicted on foreign nationals living in South Africa. Anti-foreigner protests continue to gather pace. The church’s Vicar-General, Reverend Stephen Diseko, says while they believe immigration laws should be enforced, they should be implemented by the proper authorities and not vigilantes. He has called on those who are instigating and spreading animosity against foreign nationals to stop:
# The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has introduced a series of measures to ensure patients from the Central Karoo continue receiving specialist healthcare. This is despite severe weather damage that has disrupted key transport routes. Major routes linking the Central Karoo and Garden Route districts, including Meiringspoort and the Uniondale Pass, have been closed. MEC Mireille Wenger says the province is dealing with an estimated nine-billion-rand in infrastructure damage:

# The Oslo District Court has sentenced the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit to four years in prison. The 29-year-old Marius Borg Høiby was found guilty of several crimes, including two counts of rape and one count of domestic violence. He raped two women, including one on the Crown Prince’s estate at Skaugum in 2018 and another in Oslo in 2024. He was also convicted of abusing his ex-girlfriend, Norwegian influencer Nora Haukland, but was acquitted on two other accounts of rape.
# Soccer: Four-time champions Germany got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start, beating debutants Curacao 7-1 in Houston. Six different players were on the scoresheet, with Kai Havertz netting two goals. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored a 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia. Liverpool forward Alexander Isak starred in his first World Cup appearance, leading Sweden to a 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey, scoring one goal and providing two assists. The Netherlands played to a 2-all draw against Japan in Dallas.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-17-cents and the euro at 18-rand-76-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-597-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-329-dollars-64-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-95-cents a barrel.
