# Deputy minister of Police, Polly Boshielo, has refuted claims that undocumented foreign nationals are being targeted. Over 40-thousand illegal foreign nationals have been arrested since the beginning of this year, with over seven-thousand-400 arrests made in the past month alone, as government intensifies efforts to tackle illegal immigration and strengthen border security. Boshielo says the migration management strategy across various government departments focuses on all races and nationalities:
# Gun violence should no longer be viewed primarily as a criminal justice issue, but as a sustained public health problem in South Africa. This is according to a study by University of Cape Town researchers and Gun Free South Africa. Firearm-related murders increased from 31- to 44-percent of all murders between 2020 and last year. UCT’s Dean Peacock says firearm injuries should go beyond emergency treatment to include mental health support. The study proposes strengthening firearm injury surveillance and integrating firearm risk screening into domestic violence and mental-health services.
# Gauteng Education MEC, Lebogang Maile, says the department has implemented a range of interventions aimed at improving school safety and creating secure learning environments. This follows the identification of 245 high-risk schools, resulting in targeted interventions to support schools facing elevated safety risks. Maile says private security services were initially deployed to 75 schools and later expanded to 121 schools identified as requiring additional protection and support:

# Former US president Barack Obama is doubtful any agreement between America and Iran is going to be significantly different or an improvement over the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear agreement. President Donald Trump abandoned the agreement during his first term. Washington and Tehran have agreed on a peace deal. Obama told ABC News he remains hopeful:
# Soccer: Four-time champions Germany got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start, beating debutants Curacao 7-1 in Houston. Six different players were on the scoresheet, with Kai Havertz netting two goals. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored a 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia. Liverpool forward Alexander Isak starred in his first World Cup appearance, leading Sweden to a 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey, scoring one goal and providing two assists. The Netherlands played to a 2-all draw against Japan in Dallas.
