Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Analysts warn a government of national unity might not bring stability
# The Climate Commission is concerned about South Africa’s readiness for extreme weather
# And golf: Scottie Scheffler makes history once again
# Analysts warn that while the idea of a government of national unity is good in principle, it may not bring stability. The ANC is currently meeting with political parties represented in the National Assembly, to discuss the proposal and possibly secure president Cyril Ramaphosa’s re-election. Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says parties agreeing to a government of national unity does not mean their differences cease to exist. He adds that what will matter are areas they can unite around.
# The Presidential Climate Commission says it is deeply concerned about the country’s readiness for climate change and extreme weather. This comes as several parts of the country experienced heavy rains and flooding last week, including a tornado in KwaZulu-Natal. The commission’s Crispian Olver says urgent work needs to be done to improve South Africa’s resilience to these kinds of extreme weather phenomenons.
Meanwhile, Greenpeace Africa says the increasing frequency and intensity of such weather events is a direct consequence of the reckless scramble for fossil fuels in Africa by international oil corporations. The Eastern Cape also experienced deadly heavy rains and flooding last week, while the Western Cape saw its second cut-off low system. Greenpeace Africa says these events underscore the climate emergency and the need for major oil and gas producers like Shell and Total to stop drilling in South Africa.
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler has become just the second player after Tiger Woods to win the Players Championship, Masters, and Memorial in the same year. The 27-year-old American ended with a final round two-over 74 to win the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament by one stroke, capturing his fifth title of the season. American Collin Morikawa finished second ahead of Canada’s Adam Hadwin. Scheffler says Muirfield Village is always a tough place to play:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-81-cents and the euro at 20-rand-25-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-93-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-441-dollars-51-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-296-dollars-35-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-83-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Film and Publication Board has expressed alarm over rising child pornography cases, particularly in the Western Cape. The board’s Ephaim Tljhako says seven people have been arrested regarding an online child pornography ring from late 2023 to January this year. The accused were found in possession of thousands of child images and videos. Tljhako warns that people who children trust the most are often likely to be the perpetrators:
