In this bulletin:
# The acting minister of Police says South Africa faces a serious threat from organised crime
# Twelve people are killed in a mass shooting in an informal settlement in Johannesburg
# And cricket: Ben Stokes is reportedly considering his future as England’s captain
# Acting minister of Police Firoz Cachalia says gangs, extortion mafias, drug syndicates, illegal mining networks, trafficking rings and corruption cartels are undermining the state, the economy and the rule of law. President Cyril Ramaphosa identified organised crime as the most immediate threat to democracy and society as a whole. Cachalia says it’s important to ensure provincial safety plans identify and address organised crime drivers, while driving effective anti‑corruption initiatives:
# AfriForum says the firearms control crisis is the responsibility of the government and not law-abiding citizens. The organisation argues the focus should be on poor management of state-owned weapons instead of stricter laws on legal gun owners. Spokesperson Jacques Broodryk says public safety will remain at risk unless government improves how it stores and manages its weapons. He calls for tighter security of state weapons to prevent firearms from reaching criminal networks:
# Gauteng police have launched a manhunt after a mass shooting that claimed the lives of 12 people and left at least nine others injured at Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland in the east of Johannesburg last night. More than ten attackers were apparently dropped off from a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station. Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says they opened fire at multiple locations before fleeing the scene:
Moving abroad:
# Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has launched retaliatory strikes on US targets in the Middle East. It targeted an airbase in Jordan hosting American forces, as well as Kuwait and Bahrain. This is in response to US strikes on air defence systems, ground control stations, and radar sites in Tehran, following the downing of an American helicopter on Monday. Iran says its forces remain fully prepared to deliver a crushing response to any subsequent US military actions, adding Washington would bear full responsibility for the consequences of further escalation.
# Cricket: Ben Stokes is reportedly considering stepping down as England’s captain, as he and teammate Gus Atkinson are being investigated for a breach of team protocols. They were involved in an altercation with a Saracens academy player in a London nightclub in the early hours of Monday evening, following England’s first Test victory over New Zealand. The incident left an England and Wales Cricket Board security official needing stitches. Stokes is reportedly also considering calling time on his 15-year career.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-50-cents and the euro at 19-rand-7-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-9-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-538-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-205-dollars-55-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 90-dollars-49-cents a barrel.
