# RISE Mzansi says the One Stop Border Post Bill has great potential, and if implemented properly, it can help address the long-standing border management challenges. The bill, which has been passed by the National Assembly, aims to establish a legal framework for creating shared border posts between South Africa and its neighbouring countries. RISE Mzansi’s Makashule Gana says the success of this bill depends on partnership and trust among Southern African Development Community member states:
# The Minerals Council South Africa says optimising the regulatory environment is key to unlocking the full economic potential of the mining industry. Last year, the industry contributed 470-billion-rand to household income and supported over 3.5-million people, including workers and suppliers. The sector paid 342-billion-rand in taxes, invested 160-billion-rand in equipment and infrastructure, and sold 248-billion-rand in minerals locally. The council’s Allan Seccombe says a stable, investor-friendly environment will boost mining, jobs, and economic growth.
# Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi says the province is ready to host the G20 leaders’ summit at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg later this month. The summit will be attended by over 60 heads of state and government officials, including US vice president JD Vance and Chinese president Xi Jinping, along with leaders of international organisations. Lesufi says the province is well equipped to ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants and residents:
# Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the next mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim and first of Indian descent to hold office. At 34-years-old, he is the US city’s youngest mayor since 1892. He defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The Democratic Party has also secured governor-race victories in New Jersey and Virginia. In his victory speech, Mamdani vowed to usher in a generation of change, which rejects president Donald Trump’s politics:
# Cricket: South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt has been named captain of the Women’s one-day World Cup’s Team of the Tournament. The 12-member team consists of six players who featured in the final between India and the Proteas. India, which won the tournament for the first time, has three players in the team: Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma. South Africa also has three players: Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp and Nadine de Klerk. Three Australian players, two English and Pakistan’s Sidra Nawaz complete the squad.
