# President Cyril Ramaphosa says a coordinated African response to the migration challenge is needed
# The EFF accuses Fikile Mbalula of criminalising the EFF through manufactured propaganda
# And rugby: The Junior Boks defeat Georgia to remain unbeaten in the Junior World Championship
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa is committed to managing migration in a manner that upholds human rights, and balances citizens’ concerns with foreign nationals’ dignity and safety. During a bilateral meeting with the Democratic Republic of Congo’s president, Félix Tshisekedi, in Kinshasa, they discussed issues including the Ebola outbreak and migration. Ramaphosa says South Africa will intensify diplomatic engagement with other African countries to develop a coordinated approach to migration:
# The EFF has hit back at ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula after he accused the party of organising door-to-door campaigns targeting foreign nationals, saying these claims are false. He made the claims during a media briefing yesterday. The EFF says Mbalula cannot erase the historical reality that outbreaks of xenophobic violence and organised anti-immigrant mobilisation have plagued South Africa since at least 2007, years before the party was even formed. It has accused Mbalula of attempting to criminalise the EFF through manufactured propaganda.
# ActionSA says the Constitutional Court ruling against the Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town confirms the DA has failed to deliver well-located, affordable housing where it is needed most. The court ruled the sale of the Tafelberg site was unlawful, and both parties have failed to meet their constitutional obligations to provide adequate housing. ActionSA’s Dereleen James says developing well-located affordable housing is essential for restoring spatial justice:
Moving abroad:
# Britain’s National Crime Agency is warning drug-facilitated sexual assault is no longer an isolated behaviour and is increasingly organised. The agency has uncovered an international network of organised drug-facilitated sexual assault, in which victims are sedated before being raped and sexually assaulted. Since October last year, the NCA has identified 270 people linked to forums where footage of coordinated sexual abuse is shared online. At least eight people have been arrested in the UK. NCA’s Nigel Leary says online platforms are enabling and supporting direct offending.
# Rugby: Defending champions South Africa maintained their perfect start to the Junior World Championship by beating hosts Georgia 33-5 in Tbilisi. The Junior Springboks scored five tries to one, with Siphosethu Mnebelele crossing the line twice. Argentina, Australia, England, France, New Zealand and Wales also made it back-to-back victories in the second-round pool matches. Junior Boks coach Kevin Foote praised his team’s composure and maturity against a physical Georgian side:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-19-cents and the euro at 18-rand-54-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-614-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-176-dollars-10-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-11-cents a barrel.
