# Sixteen people die in a bus crash near Touwsrivier in the Western Cape
# Fikile Mbalula criticises Jacob Zuma for meeting with the Guptas
# And soccer: Bafana Bafana receives a heroes’ welcome after a historic World Cup campaign
# A bus accident has claimed the lives of 16 people while two have sustained serious injuries on the N1 near Touwsrivier in the Western Cape this morning. The Mobility Department’s spokesperson, Maxine Bezuidenhout, says the bus was the only vehicle involved in the crash and is believed to have overturned. She says 73 passengers, all South Africans, were on board the bus:
# ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has criticised former president Jacob Zuma’s recent visit to India, accusing him of spitting in the face of those tasked with bringing the Guptas to justice. Zuma was photographed at a Hindu temple alongside Ajay Gupta. The National Prosecuting Authority has made several unsuccessful attempts to extradite Ajay and his brother Rajesh to South Africa to face charges related to state capture. Mbalula says instead of partying up a storm with runaway criminals, Zuma should inform the government where the Guptas are.
# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse says accountability is a human right, and Parliament must protect it through stronger oversight, while government must be held accountable for spending and service delivery. According to the organisation, weak oversight leads to poor governance, corruption and failing public services that directly affect people’s rights in areas such as education, healthcare and economic opportunity. OUTA’s Rachel Fischer says effective parliamentary scrutiny is essential to protect citizens’ rights and improve accountability in government.
Moving abroad:
# US president Donald Trump has pushed back at allegations he is profiting off the presidency, saying he is earning more because the stock market is rising. His personal financial disclosures show he raked in more than 16.4-billion-rand through an array of cryptocurrency holdings, royalty payments, and property investments last year, and millions from selling Trump-branded Bibles and trainers. Trump says everybody is profiting from the stock market as a result of his administration’s work:
# Soccer: The history-making Bafana Bafana squad received a hero’s welcome at the OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng this morning. Although Bafana lost 1-0 to Canada in the round of 32 on Sunday, it was the first time in South African history that the national team had reached the knockout stages of a World Cup. Coach Hugo Broos says the support the team has received from South Africans has been amazing:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-38-cents and the euro at 18-rand-66-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-78-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-177-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-71-dollars-85-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-52-cents a barrel.
