# Two suspects arrested for triple murder in Gugulethu have been set free
# And, cricket: Australia make it a clean sweep in Sydney
# Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise says political parties are not allowed to control the movement of illegal immigrants at the country’s borders. Modise has briefed the media about border control and matters relating to the SANDF. She has condemned the Patriotic Alliance’s action of patrolling the Limpopo border. The minister says the patrolling of the country’s borders is the role of the South African National Defence Force, Police and the Border Management Authority.
# Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, says the two suspects arrested for the triple murder in NY 137 in Gugulethu, Cape Town, on New Year’s Eve have been set free, due to alleged gross negligence on the side of the South African Police Service. Police arrested the two people in Goodwood and Blue Downs early on Wednesday morning. Reports indicate the victims were in a vehicle about to drop off someone, when another vehicle emerged and several shots were fired. Allen says further information would have to be obtained from the SAPS:
# Five provincial Education Departments fell short of their targets for building hostels at schools from April 2022 to March last year. Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and Northern Cape failed to build a new boarding facility each, while North West only managed to construct three instead of its target of five. The Free State aimed to provide three dormitories but only built one. The annual reports of the departments revealed these shortcomings, with reasons such as delays, community unrest, and contract terminations, contributing to the failure to meet goals.
# Cricket: David Warner scored 57 runs in his last innings for Australia to help the hosts beat Pakistan in Sydney to seal a 3-0 Test series win. Marnus Labuschagne with his 19th Test half-century on 62 and Steve Smith on four were there at the end as the Australians reached the 130-run target for the loss of just two wickets. Pakistan started the fourth day of the match on 68 for the loss of seven wickets and was dismissed for 115. Josh Hazlewood took four wickets and Nathan Lyon three to set up an easy win for the hosts.
# And finally, a Cape Town family has offered a reward of 200-rand for the return of their little girl’s favourite toy. Three-year-old Ziyah Jacobs lost her cherished purple teddy bear during the city’s traditional Tweede Nuwejaar festival, and is inconsolable ever since. Her grandmother, Juleiga Rorich, says the toddler treated the toy like a live being. They lost it in Strand Street in the hustle and bustle of the festival, and an extensive search didn’t yield any result. Rorich asks people to help return the bear to Ziyah.
