# Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, says in a world grappling with inequality, digital disruption, and persistent gender gaps, South Africa has shown unity is strength, and dialogue is power. She attended the 114th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, where discussions centred around the world of work, including gender equality, and social dialogue and tripartism. Her spokesperson, Thobeka Magcai, says South Africa has secured the honour of hosting the prestigious ARLAC Governing Council meeting next year:
# ActionSA has rejected president Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent application to interdict Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee from commencing its work. He has approached the Western Cape High Court, seeking to block the committee’s work until a separate review of the Section 89 panel report is concluded. ActionSA’s Lerato Ngobeni says Parliament’s constitutional responsibilities cannot be indefinitely suspended through litigation:
# The chief inspector of Gauteng Traffic, Samuel Mashaba, has been placed on precautionary suspension, pending the conclusion of a formal disciplinary process. This follows his testimony before the Madlanga commission regarding his personal ties to an informant linked to the Aeroton drug bust. Provincial government spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, says Mashaba made admissions relating to conduct that may constitute serious breaches of the Public Service Code of Conduct, departmental policies, and applicable laws governing public servants:
Moving abroad:
# The leaders of the UK, France, Germany and Italy have welcomed the agreement between the US and Iran, saying this is a moment of opportunity to restore regional stability and stabilise the global economy. The deal includes ending military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, lifting the US naval blockade within 30 days, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. In a joint statement, the group known as the E4 says they are prepared to lift sanctions on Iran in response to clear, verifiable steps on its nuclear programme.
# Tennis: Croatia’s Donna Vekic ended a two-year title drought by winning at Queen’s in London. The 29-year-old defeated home favourite Emma Raducanu, 6-0, 7-6. Former US champion Raducanu was aiming to become the first British woman to win at Queen’s since Ann Jones in 1969. With the victory, Vekic has become the sixth lucky loser, and the first since 2023, to win a WTA title. Meanwhile in Germany, American Ben Shelton won the Stuttgart Open by beating compatriot and defending champion Taylor Fritz, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-15 and the euro at 18-rand-74. One British pound costs 21-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-731-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-323-dollars-39-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-69-cents a barrel.
