In this bulletin:
# South Africa wants a strategic partnership with Kenya
# The GOOD Party says South Africans are justifiably angry about the poor quality of their lives
# And, Donald Trump admits to calling Netanyahu ‘crazy’
# The Presidency says the strategic importance of the bilateral relations between South Africa and Kenya underlines government’s intentions to elevate the nature of the relationship to that of a strategic partnership. President Cyril Ramaphosa will host Kenyan president William Samoei Ruto on a State Visit at the Union Buildings in Tshwane today. Kenya is one of South Africa’s largest trading partners in Africa, outside of the Southern African Development Community. The Presidency says discussions between the two leaders will range from bilateral, multilateral, economic, regional and continental issues.
# The GOOD Party says government at all its levels must take responsibility for mismanaging the crisis of poverty, under-delivery, exclusion and its own immigration policies. Anti-foreigner protests have spread across the country in recent days, with flare-ups in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says South Africans are justifiably angry about the poor quality of their lives, the slow progress of post-apartheid redress, and the injustice of deepening inequality:
# Gauteng police have arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old Grade 10 learner from Mokgome Secondary School in Meadowlands, Soweto. Preliminary investigations reveal that the deceased was attacked and assaulted by unknown suspects with a panga in Braamfischerville. Police spokesperson, Tintswalo Sibeko, says more arrests are possible:
# US president Donald Trump has admitted that he called Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu ‘crazy’ during a tense phone call over fighting in Lebanon earlier this week. The latest reported clash came as Trump mulls a deal that would extend the US-Iran ceasefire and open the door to talks on the future of Tehran’s nuclear programme. Trump told the Pod Force One podcast that despite occasional differences, he and Netanyahu get along very well:
# Soccer: Iran’s World Cup squad will arrive in Mexico on Sunday, where they will be stationed throughout the tournament and only travel to the US for matches. They will depart from Turkey after attending a training camp. Tensions over the war between the US and Iran reportedly complicated the issue of US visas, prompting the team to move its base from Arizona to Tijuana. Iran’s first World Cup match is against New Zealand in Los Angeles on the 15th, followed by Group G matches against Belgium and Egypt.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-35-cents and the euro at 18-rand-98-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-95-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-542-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-471-dollars-2-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 96-dollars-17-cents a barrel.
