# US president Donald Trump has signed a presidential determination to admit an additional ten-thousand white South Africans into America as refugees this year. This raises the limit from seven-thousand-500 to 17-thousand-500 in this fiscal year. In the presidential determination, Trump states that an unforeseen emergency refugee situation now exists in South Africa, due to recent increases in the incitement of racially motivated violence on the part of the government and leaders of prominent political parties. He added that raising the refugee cap is justified.
# Government says Statistics South Africa’s 2025 General Household Survey shows significant progress in access to formal housing, electricity, water, sanitation and digital communication. The survey, conducted annually since 2002, tracks development progress and highlights persistent service-delivery gaps across South Africa. Government acting spokesperson, Nomonde Mnukwa, says formal dwellings increased to 84.2-percent, while electricity access rose from 76.7-percent in 2002 to 90.6-percent in 2025, accompanied by reduced reliance on traditional fuels:
Meanwhile, the DA, on the other hand, says the latest General Household Survey findings highlight the growing challenges facing many South Africans, particularly in ANC-governed provinces and municipalities. Nationally, 22.0-percent of households now report inadequate or severely inadequate access to food, up from 17.8-percent in 2019. The DA’s Jan de Villiers says food insecurity, grant dependency, and housing pressures continue to worsen:
# Israeli airstrikes killed 31 people in Lebanon on Tuesday, following prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to step up military action against Hezbollah. The Israel Defence Force says it hit more than 100 Hezbollah infrastructure sites, including weapons storage facilities and fighters. Lebanon’s Health Ministry has accused Israel of carrying out a series of massacres in multiple locations across southern Lebanon.
# Tennis: Top seed Jannik Sinner began his quest for a maiden French Open title with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory over French wildcard Clement Tabur. The Italian is aiming to complete the Career Grand Slam. Australian Adam Walton knocked out sixth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. In the women’s draw, defending Champion Coco Gauff eased past her American compatriot Taylor Townsend, 6-4, 6-0. World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus began her Paris campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
