# Eight people are killed in two accidents in Limpopo
# The EFF calls on the people of the world to remember Palestine
# And the Weather Service warns of severe thunderstorms today
# Six people were killed and seven injured when a vehicle lost control and hit a bridge along the R518 Mokopane to Marken road, Mogalakwena Municipality in Limpopo on Christmas Eve. In another accident, two people were killed when a bus and a truck collided head-on on the N1 between Masekwa Bricks and Masekena Garage in the Vhembe district yesterday. The spokesperson of the Limpopo Transport and Community Safety department, Dali Tshifhiwa, is urging all road users to prioritise road safety this festive season:
Meanwhile, five drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on various highways and roads in Cape Town yesterday. The city’s law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says officers attended a scene at Strandfontein Beach where a fisherman died tragically after falling and sustaining an injury. He says there was also a near-drowning at Muizenberg Beach, where a swimmer was rescued and transported to a local hospital for further treatment:
# The EFF is calling on the people of the world to remember the people of Palestine who are still subjected to bombardment and annexation of their land by the Israeli State. It says the myth of a ceasefire has been proven as nothing but a tactic to silence the world while Israel continues to murder Palestinians. The EFF says the world must never turn a blind eye to these atrocities and must intensify all efforts to isolate Apartheid Israel and give meaningful solidarity to the people of Palestine.
# The George Municipality in the Western Cape will deploy lifeguards daily at the municipal blue flag beaches at Victoria Bay, Herold’s Bay, Wilderness Main Beach, and Leentjiesklip. The municipality’s spokesperson, Chantel Edwards-Klose, says statistics show that the chance of drowning at a beach without lifeguard protection is almost five times greater than drowning at a beach with lifeguards:
# The South African Weather Service has warned of severe thunderstorms and possible flooding in several parts of the country on Boxing Day, except for the western regions, where hot to very hot conditions will prevail. A yellow level 2 warning was issued for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, and the possibility of localised flooding in regions including Gauteng, the Free State, the southern parts of Limpopo, and places in North West, the Highveld, and the escarpment of Mpumalanga.
# And cricket: England is dominating the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, England bowled out Australia for just 152 runs, fueled by Josh Tongue’s impressive 5-wicket haul. The hosts are in an unassailable lead, having won the three previous tests of their five-test Ashes series. The visitors are facing their own struggles against a fierce Australian pace attack, with the latest available score 61 for 4.
