# The DA says the ANC’s new economic plan must drop its race-based policy to work
# The Nuclear Regulator concludes the public hearings on Koeberg
# And ActionSA demands urgent intervention to address the ongoing mass killings in Gauteng
# The DA says the ANC’s Economic Action Plan must drop the failed Black Economic Empowerment policy to ensure that its new plan works. The new ten-point plan to revive the economy includes expanding electricity infrastructure, restoring the chrome and manganese industries, driving local economic development, and scaling up public employment and skills programmes. The DA’s Mat Cuthbert says South Africa needs a genuine empowerment model that makes a tangible impact in poor communities and creates a pathway out of poverty and into prosperity:
# The National Nuclear Regulator has completed its third and final round of public consultations on Eskom’s application to extend the operation of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant beyond its original design life. Hearings were held in the Northern and Western Cape. Board chairperson Protas Phili said stakeholder input is vital for transparency and safety. The regulator will now review all submissions before announcing its final decision on Koeberg’s Unit 2 application.
# ActionSA in Gauteng is demanding a comprehensive plan of action to address the escalating violent crime in the province, including improved intelligence gathering and visible policing operations in high-risk areas. This follows the killing of five people at a tavern in Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit, on Sunday. ActionSA’s Zwelithini Mtshali says this latest tragedy once again exposes the worsening state of lawlessness and the failure of law enforcement authorities to protect communities:
# Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has rejected president Donald Trump’s claim that negotiations with the Democrats are underway. Two proposals to fund the government, one from Democrats and one from Republicans, both failed in the Senate on Monday evening. This means the government shutdown is now in its seventh day. Schumer says if Trump and Congressional Republicans are finally ready to sit down and get something done on healthcare for American families, Democrats are prepared to make it happen:
# Soccer: Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala has been called up to replace the injured Relebohile Mofokeng in the Bafana Bafana squad. This is ahead of their two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. Orlando Pirates forward Mofokeng suffered a knee injury in the win over Siwelele FC on Saturday. Bafana Bafana tied on 14 points with Benin in Group C in the race for a place at the 2026 World Cup, face Zimbabwe in Durban on Friday, and Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium next Tuesday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-16-cents and the euro at 20-rand-10-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-13-cents and Bitcoin trades at 124-thousand-264-dollars.
