BULLETIN 3 October 9 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Saftu says there can be no peace in Gaza without justice
# A wave of drone sightings forces the Munich Airport to close temporarily
# And rugby: Duvenage plays his 100th match for the Stormers tonight
# The South African Federation of Trade Unions says there can be no peace in Gaza without justice, and justice demands an end to the siege, the occupation, and the daily crimes of Israel. The union federation has thrown its support for the activists aboard the Sumud Flotilla, including Nkosi Mandla Mandela, who were detained by Israeli forces. Saftu’s spokesperson, Asive Dyani, says countries must unite to isolate Israel and support Palestinian liberation:
# Metalworkers union Numsa has criticised the government for not having better control over the import of foreign products, particularly Asian and Indian vehicles, at the cost of the local manufacturing workforce. In 2018, Chinese and Indian imports accounted for one-percent of the country’s automotive sector, and in 2025, that figure had climbed to 26-percent. Numsa’s secretary general, Irvin Jim, says workers are not losing jobs because they are lazy or unskilled, but because government policy has been distorted in favour of traders and importers.
# The Freedom Front Plus is calling on the City of Tshwane to account for the disparity between the actual cost of water and the cost to deliver it to communities using hired water tankers. The metro pays one-cent a litre for water, but it costs ten-cent a litre to have it delivered with water tankers. FF Plus’ Peter Meijer says this amounts to more than 530-million-rand per financial year and is unsustainable. He says an investigation into all water tanker contracts since 2021 is needed:
# The Munich Airport in Germany was forced to close temporarily on Thursday evening due to a wave of drone sightings, resulting in the cancellation of 17 flights. Nearly three-thousand passengers were affected. In addition, 15 arriving flights were diverted to the German cities of Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Frankfurt, as well as Vienna in neighbouring Austria. This marks the latest drone disruption to European aviation, blamed on Russia, following sightings that temporarily shut airports in Denmark and Norway last week. The Kremlin has denied involvement in the drone sightings.
# Rugby: Scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage will play his 100th match for the Stormers in tonight’s United Rugby Championship encounter with the Ospreys in Cape Town. He made his debut in 2009 and also played 72 times for French club Perpignan, and 98 times for Benetton in Italy. Duvenage’s inclusion in the starting-15 is the only change to the backline that played in last weekend’s season-opener against defending champion Leinster, which the Stormers won 35-0. Lock Adré Smith will mark his 50th appearance for the home team.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-29-cents and the euro at 20-rand-26-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 120-thousand-127-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-844-dollars-25-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-37-cents a barrel.
