Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# An analyst says Zuma’s expulsion won’t enhance the ANC’s renewal agenda
# Cosatu welcomes the ANC’s renewed focus on governance and service delivery
# And a 17-year-old is arrested in connection with a deadly knife attack in Northern England
# A political analyst says former president Jacob Zuma’s expulsion will do little to enhance the ANC’s renewal agenda. The party’s national disciplinary committee has expelled Zuma after it found him guilty of campaigning and voting for the MK Party in the May general elections. He has 21 days to appeal. Nelson Mandela University political analyst Ntsikelelo Breakfast says Zuma’s long game is to project the ANC as an institution that has violated his rights, adding that he is playing politics.
The union federation Cosatu has meanwhile commended the ANC for expelling Zuma. The federation hopes this marks the end of a troubled era and praises the ANC’s commitment to renewal and tackling corruption. Cosatu’s Zanele Sabela urges the ANC to now focus on rebuilding municipalities, growing the economy, reducing unemployment, and improving public services:
# The DA in KwaZulu-Natal says it will submit a written question to Education MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, to establish the true state of safety and security in public schools. This comes after two gunmen shot a primary school teacher dead yesterday, in full view of pupils and her colleagues at Phikiswayo Primary School in Ntuzuma, north of Durban. The DA’s, Sakhile Mngadi, says it is evident that the issue of safety and security at schools remains a heightened concern:
# A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in connection with a deadly attack in Southport, England. Two children were killed and nine injured in a knife rampage targeting a dance class yesterday. Chief Constable, Serena Kennedy, says at this stage the stabbings are not being treated as terror-related, and they are not looking for any other suspect:
# Olympic Games: The American figure-skating team from the Winter Games in Beijing in 2022 will finally get their gold medal next week. This follows after Russian teenager Kamila Valieva was found guilty of doping earlier during the 2022 season and banned for four years. Her points were deducted, leading to Russia being demoted to the bronze medal, with Japan winning silver. The International Olympic Committee says although one can never replace the moment of winning a gold medal, the athletes felt Paris was as good a place as any.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-43-cents and the euro at 19-rand-96-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 66-thousand-627-dollars-49-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-386-dollars-15-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-66-cents a barrel.
