# Saftu says the lack of loan details risks a future financial burden on Johannesburg residents
# AfriForum secures an assault conviction against Alexi Bizos
# And, the Olympic Games: President Ramaphosa wishes Team South Africa well
# Union federation Saftu has condemned the City of Johannesburg’s council for securing a 2.5-billion-rand loan from the French Development Agency without disclosing critical details. The federation warns that the lack of transparency could impose a significant financial burden on residents through higher municipal service fees and potential austerity measures. Saftu’s Trevor Shaku calls for full disclosure of the loan terms and urges the council to reconsider the decision:
Meanwhile, the Joburg Crisis Alliance is holding a picket at the Metro Centre today, demanding the removal of City of Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda. The alliance, including OUTA, Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Rivonia Circle, Action for Accountability, and Defend our Democracy, cites tariff increases, corruption, and maladministration as key issues. They urge residents to support the call for Gwamanda’s resignation, criticising the worsening quality of city services under his leadership.
# AfriForum’s private prosecution unit has secured an assault conviction against Alexi Bizos, son of late human rights lawyer George Bizos. Convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Bizos punched his ex-wife Monique van Oosterhout nine years ago. AfriForum’s Barry Bateman says the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court found Bizos guilty, and the sentencing is set for August 23:
# Olympic Games: President Cyril Ramaphosa wishes Team South Africa the best success in Paris and assures the athletes of the nation’s fervent support. Ramaphosa says having the flag held aloft by Team South Africa fills citizens with great pride and expectation for their success. He says the participation also causes South Africans to reflect on how their 30 years of freedom have opened the doors for citizens from all backgrounds, walks of life and geographic locations to exercise their potential and talents.
Several South Africans will be in action on the first full day of the event in Paris after last night’s spectacular opening ceremony. The absolute highlight will be the Springbok Sevens rugby team, who will play hosts France in the first semifinal. Swimmer Erin Gallagher will participate in the 100-meter butterfly heats, and the men’s hockey team will face the Netherlands. Surfers Jordy Smith, Matthew McGillivray and Sarah Ann Baum will take to the water, and Geronay Whitebooi will participate in judo.
