# S&P Global Ratings believes a government comprising of the ANC and the DA may prove unstable. After losing its majority, the ANC has invited political parties to be part of the government of national unity. Reportedly, ANC officials have resolved key obstacles with the DA on an accord that will allow Cyril Ramaphosa to be re-elected as president in Parliament today. S&P’s Frank Gill says there is no complete consensus within the ANC to govern with the DA.
# The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure says it is ready to ensure safety and security at the first sitting of Parliament of the seventh administration in Cape Town today. The sitting will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Deputy Police Commissioner and NatJoints co-chairperson, Tebello Mosikili, says a full security assessment has been conducted, to ensure that all measures are aligned as per the integrated safety and security plan:
# The police’s National Counterfeit Goods Unit seized of over seven-thousand counterfeit items with an estimated value of 6.6-million-rand at a counterfeit goods manufacturing plant in Johannesburg yesterday. Police spokesperson, Amanda van Wyk, says items imitating well-known brands included shoes, clothing, handbags, caps, perfumes, cosmetics and backpacks were confiscated. She adds that this is the biggest counterfeit manufacturing plant bust in the past year:
# The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution that calls for the paramilitary Rapid Security Forces in Sudan to halt their siege on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state. The resolution, put forward by the UK, received 14 votes in favour, none against, with Russia abstaining. Conflict erupted in Sudan in April last year between Sudan’s Armed Forces and the RSF, resulting in the killing of over 14-thousand people. The conflict has also created the world’s largest displacement crisis.
# Cricket: Defending champions England beat Oman by eight wickets, to boost their hopes of qualifying for the T20 World Cup super eight stage. Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid starred with the ball as Oman was bowled out for just 47 runs. In reply, captain Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten 24 as England reached the target in 3.1 overs, the quickest run chase in T20 World Cup history. England will qualify for the next round on net run-rate if they beat Namibia and Scotland lose to Australia this weekend.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-45-cents and the euro at 19-rand-82-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-53-cents and Bitcoin trades at 66-thousand-699-dollars-3-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-304-dollars-92-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-35-cents a barrel.
