# The MK Party wants to interdict the first sitting of the National Assembly
# AfriForum files an urgent application against NERSA over the electricity tariff increases
# And cricket: India is at the top of Group A in T20 World Cup
# The MK Party says it will approach the Constitutional Court to interdict the convening of the sitting of the inaugural session of the National Assembly. The party says the sitting must be postponed until its grievances, which are premised on allegations of election fraud and vote rigging, are thoroughly addressed by the courts. Parliament is due to have its first sitting soon, where the president, deputy president, and speaker of the house will be elected. The MK Party says it remains resolute that new elections must be called.
# The civil rights organisation AfriForum has brought an urgent application in the High Court in Pretoria against the National Energy Regulator. The application seeks to prevent NERSA from considering municipalities’ applications for electricity tariff increases from 1 July without the required cost studies. AfriForum’s Morné Mostert says cost studies outline what tariffs should be to properly deliver services and maintain networks:
# The High Court in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape has given the Emalahleni Municipality the go-ahead to sue former Knysna municipal manager, Sitembele Wiseman Vatala, for 7.5-million-rand. This comes after he allegedly failed to settle a civil suit against the municipality timeously. The municipality sued Vatala, claiming that his negligence had caused it to suffer financial damages. In her ruling, acting Judge Nolubabalo Cengani-Mbakaza says as a municipal manager, Vatala was bound by the law not to incur unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditures.
# European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, who is aiming to serve a second term, says all parties in Europe want a strong and effective continent. Her European People’s Party is predicted to remain the largest political grouping in the European Parliament with 189 seats. Followed by the Socialists and Democrats with 135 and Renew Europe with 83. Von der Leyen says the elections have shown that a stable Europe is critical:
# Cricket: India beat Pakistan by six runs to secure their second win of the T20 World Cup. Pakistan seamers Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah claimed three wickets each as India were bowled out for 119. In reply, Jasprit Bumrah’s three wickets in four overs proved decisive as Pakistan finished on 113 for seven. In Group A, India now sits top of the table, while Pakistan is in fourth and is yet to pick up a win. Bumrah says this win was a team effort:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-87-cents and the euro at 20-rand-29-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-599-dollars-48-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-295-dollars-20-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-87-cents a barrel.
