# The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster has warned against threats of violence post the election phase, saying they are ready to respond should violence flare up. On Saturday, MK Party president Jacob Zuma warned the Electoral Commission not to declare the election results, saying this would be tantamount to provoking his party. The IEC declared the results as planned yesterday evening. Police minister Bheki Cele says they are ready to maintain peace and stability:
Meanwhile Defence and Military Veterans minister Thandi Modise says lessons were learned during the July 2021 unrest. The Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security Cluster briefed the media yesterday on the preparedness for possible post-election violence. Modise says South Africans have the right to make comments, and freedom of speech is something that was fought very hard for, but that freedom of speech has limits. She adds that all political parties have the responsibility to accept the election results:
# The ANC will not compromise on its renewal and rebuilding efforts. Addressing the media at the National Results Operations Centre in Midrand, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula acknowledged the decline in ANC support. Mbalula emphasised the need for effective governance. He also confirmed upcoming talks with political parties and stakeholders to establish strong national and provincial governments reflecting the will of the people:
# Golf: Japan’s Yuka Saso is a US Women’s Open champion for a second time, carding a two-under-par 68 for a three-shot victory at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. At 22 years and 347 days, she is the youngest two-time champion in Open history. Her compatriot Hinako Shibuno finished second and Americans Andrea Lee and Ally Ewing finished tied in third. Saso’s win puts her in a position to compete for Japan at the Olympics.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-69-cents and the euro at 20-rand-30-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-83-cents and Bitcoin trades at 68-thousand-382-dollars-69-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-321-dollars-49-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-1-cent a barrel.
# And finally, 93-year-old billionaire media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, has married for the fifth time. He tied the knot to 67-year-old retired Russian biologist, Elena Zhukova, in California. They met at a party hosted by one of Murdoch’s ex-wives, Chinese-born entrepreneur Wendi Deng. Murdoch’s New York-based company News Corp owns hundreds of local, national, and international digital news outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and Sky News Australia. He stepped down as chairman of Fox and News Corp last year, after seven decades at the helm.
