# The GOOD Party says Kunene’s resignation is a responsible move
# The Cabin Crew Association calls for accountability after a grenade was found at OR Tambo
# And cricket: The Proteas suffer defeat in a thrilling T20 tri-series final
# The GOOD Party says Kenny Kunene’s resignation as Johannesburg Transport mayoral committee member and councillor is a responsible step amid political challenges. GOOD’s Matthew Cook says while resignation is not an admission of guilt, the party commends his maturity and urges the focus now shift to urgent service delivery needs. He stressed reinforcing ethical standards and accountability in public office, amid ongoing investigations and public trust concerns:
# The South African Cabin Crew Association has called for accountability from Airports Company South Africa following a security breach at OR Tambo Airport. A passenger boarded a flight to Ethiopia with two training hand grenades in checked luggage, only discovered upon arrival. ACSA has since terminated its contract with Aviation Coordination Services, responsible for Hold Baggage Screening. The association’s Christopher Shabangu condemned the breach, urging a thorough investigation and accountability as a two-million-rand fine was imposed by the Civil Aviation Authority.
# Israel said that it began aid airdrops to Gaza yesterday and was taking several other steps to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Israeli military said “humanitarian corridors” would be established for safe movement of United Nations convoys delivering aid to Gazans and that “humanitarian pauses” would be implemented in densely populated areas. Meanwhile, Egyptian news agencies reported that aid trucks started moving towards Gaza from Egypt, after months of international pressure and warnings from relief agencies of starvation spreading in the Palestinian enclave.
# And finally, sports news:
# Cricket: South Africa faltered at the last moment on Saturday as they were edged out by New Zealand in a three-run defeat in a thrilling T20 International tri-series final in Harare. Chasing 181 runs to win, the Proteas had got off to a good start. However, needing just seven runs off the last over, the Proteas lost two wickets for just three runs. Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius hit his maiden T20 International half-century at the top of the order, contributing 51 runs off 35 balls.
# And boxing: Newly appointed chairperson of Women in Boxing Rina Sabotsky says she aims to elevate female boxers by promoting inclusivity beyond the ring as referees, judges, and officials. Speaking to SABC News, Sabotsky said that despite growth, women still lack exposure and opportunity:
Meanwhile, Sabotsky has confirmed the launch of a nine-event Women’s Boxing Series in August, aligning with Women’s Month. Sabotsky says each province will host one promotion, led by female promoters and featuring women referees, judges, and boxers. She urges the private sector to support the movement, calling it a safe and exciting time for women in boxing:
