BULLETIN 9 June 8 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Impeachment Committee says no timelines have been determined
# The Madlanga Commission confirms Feroz Khan will testify on 1 July
# And, the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor has been suspended
# Impeachment Committee chairperson, Makashule Gana, has cautioned against setting deadlines prematurely, but hopes to convene the committee’s next meeting before Parliament goes into recess at the end of the month. The committee is tasked with determining whether president Cyril Ramaphosa faces impeachable offences related to the theft of money from his Phala Phala farm more than six years ago. Gana says the committee’s immediate priorities include agreeing on the terms of reference and the witness list:
# The Madlanga commission says suspended deputy Crime Intelligence head Feroz Khan is expected to testify on the first of next month. This was after Khan withdrew his urgent court applications against the commission and the police. He sought to block access to information from devices seized last month and to have parts of the proceedings held in camera. Spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says Khan’s testimony is key due to serious allegations involving police officers:
# Eastern Cape Judge President, Selby Mbenenge, has filed an urgent interdict and review application in the High Court in Pretoria, challenging the findings of the Judicial Service Commission. The commission found him guilty of gross misconduct, which stems from allegations of sexual harassment made by his former secretary, Andiswa Mengo. In court papers, Mbenenge argues that the JSC’s findings against him are irrational. Judges Matter’s Mbekezeli Benjamin told the SABC that it is unsurprising that Mbenenge has approached the courts:
# The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has been suspended following an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations. The allegations first emerged in 2024 and were brought by a woman who worked for him at the court’s headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. Khan will now be referred to disciplinary proceedings before all 125 ICC member states, which will vote on his fate in a special session. Khan, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, says the decision to suspend him is unlawful, procedurally unfair, and unsupported by evidence.
# Cricket: The England and Wales Cricket Board is investigating a breach of team protocols involving captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, following the conclusion of the first Test against New Zealand on Sunday. The pair were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. The ECB says it is currently seeking further information. England introduced a midnight curfew for players and staff after their Ashes tour to Australia, where their players’ off-field behaviour came under heavy scrutiny.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-49-cents and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand, and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-814-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-335-dollars-82-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 92-dollars-50-cents a barrel.
