# The Department of Employment and Labour says some business sectors in South Africa, including hospitality, construction, agriculture, and informal trade, rely heavily on migrant labour. The department’s spokesperson, Teboho Thejane says the Employment Services Amendment Bill is currently before South Africa’s Parliament to modernise the labor market, primarily by heavily regulating the employment of foreign nationals:
# Police and the South African National Defence Force continue to intensify efforts aimed at disrupting and dismantling organised criminal networks involved in illicit mining, gang-related violence and other serious and violent crimes. Police spokesperson, Mpho Mathebula says during last month, coordinated multidisciplinary operations conducted across the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, North West and Western Cape provinces resulted in the arrest of one-thousand-287 suspects for a range of serious offences:
# The Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha has welcomed the breakthrough in the investigation of the recent fatal shooting of five young men in Motherwell, Gqeberha. A 28-year-old foreign national male was arrested earlier in connection with the murder of five teenagers. The department’s spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa says government is issuing a stern warning to criminals that no criminal activity will be tolerated in the province:
City Power acting CEO, Charles Tlouane has issued a stern warning to customers who continue to evade payment for municipal services and disregard municipal by-laws. He says City Power is increasingly concerned by the blatant disregard for municipal by-laws and the growing number of customers who continue to consume electricity while deliberately avoiding their payment obligations. Tlouane says some of the worst offenders are customers living in affluent estates:
# Russia says Ukraine has launched an attack on and around St Petersburg, as the city hosted the final day of an economic forum. More than 140 drones were shot down over the surrounding Leningrad region. The city’s residents were urged to stay indoors for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his forces hit Russia’s arsenals and a naval base, in response to Russian attacks. It comes a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said there was no point in meeting Zelensky for direct talks to end the war.
# And rugby The Bulls clawed their way back from the United Rugby Championship graveyard to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history. They beat Glasgow Warriors 22-21 after being 21-3 down after the first 30 minutes in Saturday’s semifinal showdown at Murrayfield. The Bulls will now face Leinster in the URC final for the second straight year after the Irish team overcame the Stormers in a bruising semi-final at Aviva Stadium.
