Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Seven people were killed in a collision on the N4 in Mpumalanga this morning
# Murray & Roberts denotes after 123 years
# And the Ukrainian capital Kyiv was under massive Russian attack this morning
# Seven people have been killed and one injured when two sedans collided head-on on the N4 toll Road between Machadodorp and Belfast in Mpumalanga early this morning. The provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, says the cause is still under investigation, but preliminary indications point to dangerous overtaking and excessive speed as possible factors:
# The Border Management Authority says it will continue to monitor all ports of entry across the country this festive season. BMA law enforcement officials intercepted more than 80 Nike Sneakers from an individual attempting to enter them into South Africa illegally at the Lebombo Port of Entry in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, yesterday. The authority’s spokesperson, Mmemme Mogotsi, said South Africa’s borders are no longer soft targets for criminal activities and illegal movement of travellers:
# The Western Cape police have strongly condemned the violent attack that claimed the lives of three people and left another critically injured in Nyanga on Christmas evening. Two unknown suspects allegedly entered a single-room structure in Mplangeni Street, Ofcon Hostel, and opened fire on the occupants. Police spokesperson Andrè Traut says preliminary investigations suggest that the attack is possibly linked to revenge or an attempt to eliminate a witness:
# South Africa’s 123-year-old construction and engineering group, Murray & Roberts Holdings, has confirmed it will exit the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in January 2026, ending its long history as a publicly-traded company. The delisting decision follows a High Court winding-up order and the planned sale of its Cementation and TNT businesses, eliminating prospects for shareholder returns. In a statement, MRH said it “acknowledged that there is no prospect of distributing returns to shareholders, nor of re-establishing its operations.”
# Ukraine’s capital Kyiv came under a massive Russian attack early on Saturday, with explosions sounding in the city, and air defences in operation. The Ukrainian military says cruise and ballistic missiles were deployed in the city. The Russian action happened two days before a meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to hold in the United States with President Donald Trump to work out details of an accord for settling the nearly four-year-old war.
# And cricket: Despite a record-breaking century from Ryan Rickelton, defending champions MI Cape Town suffered a 15-run defeat to Durban’s Super Giants in Friday’s SA20 season opener at Newlands. Chasing a massive 233, Rickelton kept the hosts in the hunt with a sensational 113 off 63 balls, including 11 sixes. However, late wickets from Eathan Bosch, 4/46, stalled the charge, leaving Cape Town at 217/7. The cricket action continues today with a double-header: Pretoria Capitals host the Joburg Super Kings, while Paarl Royals face the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Boland Park.
