# Police have launched a manhunt for hitmen who shot and killed “Witness D” of the Madlanga Commission in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, last night. Witness D gave evidence at the commission in November, implicating suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi in an apparent murder cover-up. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says Witness D arrived at his home just after 8.30 pm with his wife, and as he was about to open the gate, he was shot and sustained wounds to his upper body. His wife, who was a passenger in the car, escaped unharmed:
Meanwhile, national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, will today brief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga on the investigation into the apparent assassination of Witness D. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says Masemola will discuss efforts to enhance safety and security measures for all role-players at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry:
# The Special Investigating Unit has frozen three properties linked to a 27-million-rand Covid-19 personal protective equipment fraud case in the Northern Cape. The properties, valued at around 8.4-million-rand, are part of a civil action to recover public funds unlawfully paid to Macronym 37. According to the SIU, the company supplied inflated orders, fabricated invoices, and ignored tax rules. Former Health Department officials Daniel Gaborone and Dion Theys are facing fraud charges in connection with the case.
# The National Sea Rescue Institute urges beachgoers and coastal visitors to take extra care this weekend as the full moon spring tide peaks. Higher high tides and stronger currents increase the risk to swimmers, hikers, anglers, and boaters. The institute’s Andrew Ingram advises swimming at lifeguard-protected beaches, watching for rip currents, wearing life jackets, keeping children supervised, and keeping phones charged in waterproof pouches:
# The Swedish government yesterday proposed changes to the constitution that would allow revoking the citizenship of some criminal gang leaders, as part of its work to combat widespread organised crime. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said a bill submitted to parliament includes a proposal to revoke the passports of double citizenship holders convicted of crimes that gravely affect vital national interests, such as serious gang crime. The government won the 2022 election on a promise to reduce immigration and gang crime, which they say are linked. New general elections are due in 2026.
# And cricket: The one-day series between South Africa and India will be decided in today’s third and final encounter in Visakhapatnam. The hosts won the first match in Ranchi by 17 runs. The Proteas bounced back with a four-wicket victory in the second one in Raipur when they chased down the huge target of 359 after Aiden Markram scored 110 off just 98 balls. The two countries will meet in three T20s from Tuesday to end the tour after South Africa won the Test series 2-0.
