BULLETIN 29 November 8 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The police report more than 1,500 gender-based violence and femicide convictions
# The FF Plus says the police’s crime statistics are untrustworthy
# And cricket: The Proteas and India face off in their first ODI tomorrow
# Deputy National Commissioner of Policing, Tebello Mosikili, has announced significant progress in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide during the first two quarters of the 2025/26 financial year. A total of one-thousand-550 perpetrators were convicted between April and September. In quarter one, 652 offenders were jailed, including 99 sentenced to life. Quarter two saw 898 convictions, with 132 life sentences issued. Mosikili says the results reflect intensified investigative and prosecutor efforts nationwide.
Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus says the latest crime statistics cannot be trusted, citing corruption and mismanagement at the highest levels. According to the party, only 22-percent of South Africans still have confidence in the police, with overloaded detectives, forensic backlogs, and under-resourced crime Intelligence weakening law enforcement. The FF Plus’s Wouter Wessels cautions that public confidence in the police will fall further as ongoing investigations expose deeper failings in policing:
# The Public Servants Association has welcomed the government’s 306-million-rand allocation to repair neglected police stations, after 118 were found to be unsafe. The PSA warns that only 35-million-rand has been spent so far, raising concerns over slow progress and potential corruption. The association’s Claude Naiker says police officers in provinces like North West, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal face unsafe working conditions, affecting morale and crime-fighting:
# The Unite for Change leaders’ council will address a mass meeting in Soweto today, ahead of the 2026 local government elections. GOOD leader Patricia de Lille, BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane, and RISE Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi will brief supporters in Kliptown. The party’s Mabine Seabe says Joburg is viewed as the most contested metro:
# United Nations agencies on Friday appealed to Washington to continue allowing asylum seekers access to the country after President Donald Trump vowed to freeze migration from “Third World” countries following an attack near the White House. The comments mark a further escalation of migration measures Trump has ordered since the shooting on Wednesday that investigators say was carried out by an Afghan national who entered America in 2021. The UN human rights office said asylum seekers are entitled to protection under international law. At the same time, the UN refugee agency added that most refugees are law-abiding members of the host community.
# And cricket: South Africa and India’s men face off in the first of three one-day matches in Ranchi tomorrow, following the Proteas’ 2-0 Test series white-wash. South Africa didn’t have much luck in the recent white-ball series in Pakistan, losing both. Still, they will be at full strength, with captain Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock expected to resume their successful opening partnership. Meanwhile, India is smarting from their second home Test series defeat within a year, and is desperate to turn the tables in the shorter formats.
