# The Supreme Court of Appeal will today hear former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s application to review the decisions of the Section 194 inquiry that led to her removal from office. She is challenging the Western Cape High Court ruling that dismissed her application, in which she sought a few things. These include declaring unlawful and setting aside proceedings of the inquiry, and reviewing the decisions on October 17 2022 to dismiss the recusal applications she brought against committee chairperson Qubudile Dyantyi and committee member and the DA’s Kevin Mileham.
# The South African Municipal Workers Union is calling for urgent and decisive action to address the financial, governance, and service delivery challenges facing the country’s municipalities. This follows the release of the 2022-2023 Municipal Finance Management Act audit outcomes. Findings by Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke indicate that 110 municipalities collectively incurred 27.3-billion-rand in fruitless and wasteful expenditure. Samwu’s spokesperson, Papikie Mohale, says stronger measures must be put in place to hold municipal officials accountable for financial misconduct:
# Rise Mzansi calls for a thorough investigation into the abuse of farm workers in Limpopo, following the brutal murders of Mariah Makgato and Lucia Ndlovu, allegedly by pig farm owner Zachariah Olivier and his accomplices. The women, seeking expired food at the farm, were allegedly killed and fed to pigs. Rise Mzansi’s spokesperson, Gugu Ndima demands justice and urges the Departments of Employment and Labour, and Agriculture, to examine conditions on the farm and other local farms:
# The United Nations Human Rights has called on Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers to immediately repeal the newly adopted law on the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The legislation sets up rules for everyday life and adds to the litany of restrictions on women. The UN’s, Ravina Shamdasani, says the legislation cements policies that completely erase women’s presence in public, silencing their voices, and depriving them of their autonomy:
# Athletics: South Africans Bradley Nkoana and Bayanda Walaza are through to the men’s 100-metre final at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru. Thailand’s Puripol Bonsoon edged out Nkoana by one-thousandth of a second in their semifinal. Walaza recovered from an early stumble to win the third semifinal in 10.33-seconds ahead of Britain’s Teddy Wilson. Nkoana and Walaza were both part of the four-by-100-metre relay team that won silver at the Paris Olympic Games earlier this month.
