# The Department of International Relations and Cooperation says AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini was officially invited to attend the Southern African Development Community Summit in Durban last month. This comes after the King claimed he was sidelined from the event, accusing the government of disrespecting him by holding such a high-profile event in his province without acknowledging him. The department’s spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, says His Majesty King Misuzulu was expected to attend the official banquet and the opening ceremony:

# The DA says the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union’s latest attack on minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, is a clear attempt to protect wrongdoing. SADTU has called on president Cyril Ramaphosa to sanction Gwarube, following her decision to keep the new Foundation Phase textbook catalogue suspended. The union says this is despite investigations finding no evidence of wrongdoing in the procurement process. The DA says the minister did her job by stopping the process, seeking legal clarity, and preventing provinces from illegally procuring textbooks.

# Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says government cannot accelerate the elimination of the infrastructure backlog while simultaneously spending scarce public resources rebuilding classrooms, toilets, laboratories, fences and other assets that have been deliberately vandalised or stolen. The province’s infrastructure pressures have been compounded by population growth, migration, housing development, urbanisation and changing settlement patterns. Maile says every rand spent replacing deliberately destroyed infrastructure is a rand that could have created additional classroom capacity, maintained another school or expanded educational opportunities elsewhere:

# Five people have died after an Amazon cargo aircraft overran the runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport and caught fire. Five other people were injured, three in critical condition. The Amazon Air cargo aircraft was one of more than 250 carriers that the e-commerce giant operates daily to ship customer packages. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Raied Jadallah says the National Transportation Safety Board has assembled a team to investigate the accident:

# Rugby: Defending champions Griquas will host the Pumas in the Currie Cup final in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on Saturday. In the first of two playoff games yesterday afternoon, the Griquas delivered a ruthless seven-try masterclass to overpower the Lions 52-12 in their clash in Kimberley. This was followed by a titanic battle in Bloemfontein, where the Pumas edged the Cheetahs 27-24. The final will be a repeat of the 2022 showpiece, which the Pumas won 26-19 to lift the Cup for the first and only time in their history.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 15-rand-98-cents and the euro at 18-rand-55-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-58-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 79-thousand-749-dollars.
