# The much-anticipated G20 Leaders’ Summit, the first to be held in Africa, gets underway at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg today. The summit takes place at a time of global uncertainty, with world leaders expected to address major challenges and crises, and promote strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth. The summit’s theme is Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability. Reporter Lusanda Bill has more:
Meanwhile, DA leader and Agriculture minister, John Steenhuisen, says he agrees with president Cyril Ramaphosa that it would not be proper for the US to send a junior diplomat to receive the G20 presidency. America, which is boycotting the G20 Leaders’ Summit this weekend, will send its Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard to attend the declaration handover ceremony on Sunday as a formality. Steenhuisen says it would have been better for the US to have had a delegation participating in the summit:
And Gauteng motorists have been warned of temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and intermittent disruptions across key highways and major urban routes to accommodate the G20 Leaders’ Summit this weekend. Closures will affect Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni. Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, says high-security operations will impact the N1, N3, N12, M1, and parts of the Golden Highway:
# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse has criticised the Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities for issuing guidance on small-scale embedded generation installations that fall outside the law. OUTA says municipalities cannot introduce extra approval processes or override the legally required certificate of compliance, which confirms an installation is safe. OUTA’s Stefanie Fick says a stable regulatory system is essential for public safety, investor confidence, and the growth of decentralised energy in South Africa:
# Mellon Educate’s 2025 Building Blitz concluded at two Western Cape schools, with 450 volunteers from the UK, Ireland, and South Africa transforming classrooms and launching new Literacy Hubs. The initiative addresses the literacy crisis, where 81-percent of Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning. Principal Mandisa Lehoke of the A.C.J. Phakade Primary School in Lwandle, Strand, says the school would now be able to set the bar much higher with regard to pass rates:
# Rugby: This weekend marks the final Test of the year for most countries. Wales welcomes the All Blacks to Cardiff this afternoon, followed by the clash between the Springboks and Ireland at Dublin, with kick-off at 7.40 this evening. Then Italy and Chile will do battle in Genoa, whereafter Australia has the difficult task of beating France at the Stade France to avoid concluding a winless tour. Tomorrow, Scotland and Tonga will play at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, and England and Argentina will fight it out at Twickenham.
