Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# President Ramaphosa says the G20 Summit must address debt vulnerabilities
# Nancy Pelosi will retire from Congress after nearly 40 years
# And rugby: Rassie is expecting a fierce contest against France
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa is presiding over the G20 at a time when the world is faced with increasing wealth and income inequalities. The G20 Leaders’ Summit will be held in Johannesburg on the 22nd and 23rd of this month. Answering questions in the National Assembly yesterday, Ramaphosa said the summit must make a political commitment to address debt vulnerabilities in low and middle-income countries effectively and comprehensively:
# The Electoral Commission welcomes the opportunity to defend the integrity of last year’s elections in court. The MK Party has filed an application seeking to have the national and provincial election results set aside, claiming they were not free and fair. The commission will oppose the application, presenting evidence that the elections were conducted in line with the Constitution and electoral laws. The matter is set for hearing in the High Court in Johannesburg on 26 November.
# The DA has urged Higher Education and Training minister, Buti Manamela, to clarify steps to stabilise the National Student Financial Aid Scheme amid growing chaos. This after former board chairperson Karen Stander resigned over claims of bullying, racism, and intimidation, while acting CEO Waseem Carrim seeks legal advice. The DA’s Delmaine Christians warns that ongoing instability could delay or block next year’s student funding for tuition and accommodation. Christians calls for a full investigation.
# Anti-migrant group Operation Dudula says it will appeal the recent ruling by the High Court in Johannesburg, preventing it from blocking foreign nationals from accessing public healthcare facilities or schools. The group has embarked on a sustained campaign to block foreign nationals from accessing public facilities in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in particular. The court ruled that the group’s actions are unlawful. Operation Dudula president Zandile Dabula says the judgment sets a dangerous precedent:
# Nancy Pelosi, the first and only elected female speaker of the US House of Representatives, says she will not be seeking re-election to Congress at the end of her term in January 2027. This will draw to a close a decades-long career that saw the California Democrat become one of the most powerful figures in American politics. The 85-year-old is also the first woman to lead a major political party in either chamber of Congress. Pelosi has represented part of the San Francisco area in the House since 1987.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says the selectors picked a team that is best suited to what they expect from France in Paris tomorrow. Six changes have been made to the squad that beat Japan at Wembley last weekend. Boan Venter replaces the injured Ox Nche at loosehead prop, while Thomas du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Damian Willemse all return to the starting lineup. RG Snyman drops to the bench. Erasmus says they are bracing for a fierce contest:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-37-cents and the euro at 20-rand-5-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-80-cents and Bitcoin trades at 101-thousand-35-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-999-dollars-97-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-42-cents a barrel.
