# Former US president Donald Trump is safe and unharmed after what the FBI says appears to be an attempted assassination. Secret Service agents opened fire when they spotted a person with a firearm at the Trump International golf course west of Palm Beach, where the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort home is located. Trump was playing golf at the time. The suspect fled in a car and was arrested after being stopped on the highway. A weapon, scope, backpacks, and GoPro camera were found in shrubs near the edge of the golf course.
# Former president Thabo Mbeki says the ANC’s renewal process cannot be done on a factional basis. He addressed an ANC Gauteng renewal workshop in Boksburg on Johannesburg’s East Rand yesterday. The May general elections saw the party fall below 50-percent for the first time since the advent of democracy. Mbeki says the renewal of the ANC to win back the support of the people will depend on improving the quality of its membership:
# AfriForum is calling for urgent reforms in the South African Police Service after over 2.4-billion-rand was paid out in claims for unlawful arrests since 2018. AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk stressed the need for improved police training, legal education, and system overhauls to restore public trust in law enforcement:
# ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has confirmed that the party will withdraw from the DA-led coalition in the Tshwane metro. Mashaba stated that the party’s alignment with the Multi-Party Charter led to voters punishing ActionSA in the elections. The announcement comes as the ANC in Tshwane submitted yet another motion of no confidence against DA mayor Cilliers Brink. He emphasised that ActionSA seeks partners who declare corruption as the main enemy and aims to form a new government in Tshwane to serve all residents.
# Airports Company South Africa says it expects no disruptions to operations at King Shaka International Airport, amid a four-day strike by the KwaZulu-Natal E-hailing Council starting today. The council says the strike is about several issues affecting the livelihood and safety of drivers and vehicle owners who operate on Uber, Bolt, and inDrive in the province. These include excessive commission fees, safety concerns, and promotional prices. Acsa says contingency plans have been put in place to mitigate any disruptions to airport operations.
# Golf: South Africans Jean Hugo and Ruan Korb finished on 20 under par with a closing 63 to win the Ubunye Championship at the Pretoria Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate. The tournament saw Sunshine Tour professionals competing in a team format.
