# President Cyril Ramaphosa and newly elected UK prime minister Keir Starmer have expressed their shared commitment to deepening relations between the two countries. Starmer assumed the position last week Friday after the Labour Party recorded a landslide historic victory in the general election. This ended 14 years of Conservative rule. The Presidency says in a phone call, Ramaphosa congratulated Starmer and the two leaders expressed their commitment to deepen relations in areas including the just energy transition, trade, and investment.
# Four South Africa National Defence members have died due to a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in the North West. The members were on duty as part of Operation Vala Umgodi aimed at combating illegal mining activities. SANDF spokesperson, Siphiwe Dlamini, says preliminary findings are that the death of the members could have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, from a possible fire made by the members during the cold night inside the container structure:
# The City of Cape Town says its multi-disciplinary disaster coordinating team remains activated until the worst of the weather, and the impacts, have been addressed. More than four-thousand people have been left homeless and about one-thousand homes have been destroyed, following heavy rains caused flooding over the weekend. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says they will continue to conduct assessments to determine the nature and extent of any humanitarian relief required:
# Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, will this week officially announce the commencement date and process for the 2025 online admissions for Grades 1 and 8. He will also outline the application and placement process. The delay in launching the application system for next year’s intake has left thousands of parents stressed. Chiloane has assured the department has improved the system.
# Motorsport: Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton won a rain-interrupted British Grand Prix, his home race, for a record ninth time. The Mercedes driver held off a late charge from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to claim his first Formula One victory since the 2021 season. McLaren’s Lando Norris finished third. The record-extending 104th Grand Prix victory of Hamilton’s career saw him become the first F1 driver to win the same race nine times. Hamilton says winning at home is special:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-16-cents and the euro at 19-rand-67-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-27-cents and Bitcoin trades at 54-thousand-899-dollars-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-385-dollars-95-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 86-dollars-28-cents a barrel.
# And finally, the US star John Cena announced he plans to end his illustrious career next year. The 47-year-old says his swansong will be at the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Cena says he had been doing the World Wrestling Entertaining events for longer than 20 years and encountered incredible prosperity and tremendous hardship. He was crowned world champion 16 times since his debut in 2001. Cena also appeared in several films, including Trainwreck, The Suicide Squad, and Argylle.
