# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected for a second term as the president of South Africa. The National Assembly elected Ramaphosa with an overwhelming majority of 283 votes. EFF president Julius Malema received 44 votes. Ramaphosa says political parties who participated in the elections need to pledge to cooperate and work together in two ways; as a voluntary Parliament of national unity and as a voluntary government of national unity:
In another development the DA’s Annelie Lotriet was elected as the deputy speaker of the National Assembly. Lotriet gathered 273 votes while ATM leader Vuyo Zungula received 54 votes. Lotriet was nominated by DA MP Siviwe Gwarube and Zungula by EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu. She joined the National Assembly is 2009. Lotriet pledged to work with newly elected speaker Thoko Didiza:
And in KwaZulu-Natal, the government of provincial unity, comprising of the IFP, ANC, DA and NFP, has elected IFP provincial chairperson, Thami Ntuli, as premier. Ntuli defeated Phathisizwe Chiliza of the MK Party with 41 votes to 39. The ANC’s Nontembeko Boyce was re-elected as speaker, and Mmabatho Tembe from the DA is the new deputy speaker. Ntuli says he had since resigned as mayor in King Cetshwayo District Municipality and as councillor in Nkandla:
# Rugby: Springbok flanker Marco van Staden is back for the Bulls in this afternoon’s United Rugby Championship semifinal against Leinster in Pretoria. The World Cup winner is fit again after an injury. This is one of three changes director of rugby Jake White made to his starting 15, with Sergeal Petersen being promoted to number 14, and Devon Williams playing left wing. Ruan Nortjé is the captain. The other semifinal will be played in Ireland tonight where Munster will host Scotland’s Glasgow Warriors.
# And finally: An Asian elephant in central Thailand has given birth to a rare set of twins, in what caretakers have described as a miracle. The mother, 36-year-old Chamchuri, gave birth to a male calf, but while cleaning it up they realised that Chamchuri had given birth to a second calf, a female. The second birth sent the mother into a panic and caretakers had to restrain her to prevent her from stepping on the female calf. Researchers say twins occur in only one-percent of elephant births. Elephants are considered sacred in Thailand.
